[Publi-reportage] The Awarding Ceremony of Huawei ICT Competition Mauritius 2021-2022 Closed Successfully

[Port Louis 27 October, 2022] Huawei awarded eleven Mauritian winners and two instructors in the Global ICT Competition. At the same ceremony, 32 outstanding students from 5 ICT Academies have successfully completed the recent held training program and certified by Huawei remarks the successful closing of 6th edition of Seeds for the Future Program held recently.

Huawei Mauritius today awarded the top 11 students from the National Final, Regional Final and Global Final of the ICT Competition 2021-2022. Gajadhar Darshini, Korimbocus Muhammad Ikhlas and Imrit Aziim from University of Mauritius won second prize at Sub-Saharan Regional Final-Cloud Track Competition. Same team has won the third prize at Global Final-Cloud Track. His Excellency Mr. Prithvirajsing Roopun addressed, His Excellency Mr. Zhu Liying awarded winners at the ceremony. Mrs. Qu Ying-Economic and Commercial Counsellor of Chinese Embassy, Yang Chen-Vice president Huawei Southern Africa, Zheng Kui and Shaffeeq EYDATOULAH from Huawei Mauritius office also attended the event.

Furthermore three students namely Reeshay Dabeedin, Vashi Rughoo, Sheeksha Joyseeree, under the guidance of Dr. Mahendra Gooroochurn and Mr. Roshan Halkoree from University of Mauritius won third prize on Sub-Saharan Regional Final-Innovation Track. Other winning students were drawn from University of Mauritius, Open University of Mauritius and Polytechnics Mauritius by achieving national prizes in Mauritius National Final-Cloud Track and Network Track. It is to emphasize that it is the first year Mauritius team participated the Innovation Competition and won excellent prized in the Sub Saharan region.

Eleven top winners including two instructors received Huawei Pad 11 and other wearable devices as gift by Huawei. 5 Signed ICT Academies namely University of Mauritius, University of Technology Mauritius, Middlesex University, Universite des Masgareign, Polytechnics Mauritius and Africa Leadership College received the award as Best ICT Academy.

At same event, 32 students from 5 Universities have successfully completed Huawei Seeds for the Future Program 2022. The certification of achievement have been awarded to the students by Huawei regional representative.

“According to the 2022 Global Innovation Index, Mauritius globally for its performance and retained its first position within the Sub Saharan Africa Region.” addressed by His Excellency Mr. Prithvirajsing Roopun. “This year remarks 50th anniversary of Mauritius and China diplomatic relations. Global players like Huawei supported the national initiative of creating talent by training our workforce and increase their employability…”

His Excellency Mr. Prithvirajsing Roopun handed over the awards to the 3 top prize winners at the occasion of ICT Competition Awarding Ceremony. President also addressed the students at his speech: “you must have learnt a lot during your journey with Huawei and experienced the fast-growing digital network”.

During his annually visit in Mauritius, Mr. Yang Chen, Vice president Huawei Southern Africa acknowledged the achievement of the students before stepping into their career: “through our initiatives like “Seeds for the Future”, Huawei Certificate and ICT competition, students have opportunities to enhance their understanding and interests of the industry. Today we are pleased to see many of the participants joined Huawei and partners, becoming the important engine thriving the digitalization of the Nation.” He further added: “with the vision of Leadership, Employability, Advancement and Possibility, Huawei intends to meet local needs from 4 layers of the hierarchy of digital skills for Mauritius, including government digital capacity building, ICT practitioners’ upskilling, young ICT talent developing , and general digital literacy promoting. Our goal is to provide at least 1000 enablement opportunities to Mauritian digital talents every year, through “DigiTalent” program honored by His Excellency President of Republic of Mauritius”.

At the event, His Excellency Mr. Zhu Liying, Ambassador of People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Mauritius also addressed his congratulations to the winners and graduates. “As a leading global ICT infrastructure and smart device provider, Huawei has been operating locally and actively cultivating local talent in Mauritius for many years.” Ambassador Zhu Liying added: “The project is a successful case of Sino-Mauritian talent cooperation and joint training between schools and enterprises, which has been recognized by Mauritius population. Thanks to the most advanced Huawei technology, Mauritius has gained and will maintain its leading position in Africa. While congratulating Huawei, I also congratulate Mauritius on its strategic choices.”

The Huawei ICT Competition was announced in June 2019 and saw over 1000 students from partnered universities in Mauritius register to take part. The competition gave students the option to compete in either Network Track or Cloud Track based on their career interests with Network Track featuring Security, Networking and WLAN while Cloud Track cutting-edge technologies such as Cloud Service, Big Data and AI.

Due to Huawei’s commitment in ICT talent cultivation, and significant presence on campus through multiple upskilling programs, a record number of students have registered for the program. They were given access to the latest training materials through an online learning platform with e-learning videos & mock practice questions to learn skills as they prepared to sit for the Preliminary of the competition from where only the top students would proceed to the Regional and Global Final.
