We could have expected, albeit somewhat naively, that as we near the celebration of the 50th Independence Anniversary, the avalanche of scandals that shook the country of late would somewhat abate, making abstraction, of course, of the lesser ones, a constant. Yet, here it continues this time involving, once again, the highest institution with a scandal, as reported in the media, that pales all others, given who and what are involved, that surfaced in the preceding months, provoking reactions that make the whole nation feel ashamed, the more so that many eminent personalities will be attending soon our Independence celebrations. One daily front-paged in bold characters, ‘La Présidente embarrasse le PMO’. ‘Embarrasse’ in what manner and with what consequence? Will the one at the helm react in a manner that shows he is really in command. He has promised to be ‘sans pitié’ with drug traffi ckers. But he has not committed himself beyond that, and which remains to be seen.

Will he, or rather can he, review his stand to simply be ‘sans pitié’ whenever the circumstances so warrant. Will we emulate Zimbabwe and South Africa with a resounding episode of someone forced to quit! Should this be the case, it will be a traumatic experience, however much justifi ed. Among the reactions, so far, that attracted attention was that of the one who can ‘read in the eyes’, but this time ‘trop occupé pour en parler’. It appears he cannot imagine ‘lepep admirab pa pou tro okipe pou okip’ him soon, given his numerous controversial declarations and apologetic stances of late that stunned everybody while the condemnation was quasiunanimous – ‘bal kouler, femel lisien, touy kok, lalang’ etc. Until he comes out of his ‘occupation’ to defend, once more, the indefensible. Most uncommitted observers will not necessarily jump on the band wagon of those cohorts who will relish this new opportunity to fi re broadsides at and drive political opponents to the wall. Yet a sentiment of despair, indeed disgust, pervades the country that leads one to concur with that local singer ‘ki pou selebre’.

Certainly not those who make public displays of their seeming righteousness, yet … ‘elle aussi’! But the feeling we are heading for some unprecedented crisis gains ground. To conclude, I’ll beg the indulgence of readers to allow me to quote a Bible prophecy: ‘For there is nothing hidden that will not become manifest, nor anything carefully concealed that will never become known and come out in the open’.

(Gospel of Luke, chapter 8, verse 17). Who’s next! MARCH 2, 2018 P.S. PRAVIND JUGNAUTH TODAY HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW HE HAS L’ÉTOFFE. ANY DILLY-DALLYING WILL CONFIRM THE ‘OTHERS’ ARE RIGHT.
