In addition to saving energy, keeping temperatures closer to 25°C could go a long way towards bringing in sales and revenue, while keeping utility bills down and promoting a greener environment.

In addition to saving energy, keeping temperatures closer to 25°C could go a long way towards bringing in sales and revenue, while keeping utility bills down and promoting a greener environment. Beyond a willingness to pay more, people were more interested, enthusiastic, delighted and captivated when they feel physically warmer than colder. Shopping malls and offices often have ambient temperatures closer to the 18°C that we used to define “cold temperature”.

Virtually everyone on the U.K. far left had assumed that any popular movement opposing the neoliberal consensus would develop outside of the Labour Party. Instead it seems that, however improbably, Britain’s Podemos moment is occurring within one of Europe’s historic social democratic parties. A movement embracing participatory democracy and prepared to utilize high technology in the pursuit of that goal has the chance to radically transform Britain's ossified society.

Because it didn't take part in them. Although Arvin Boolell did tell us at one point in time that a list of candidates was almost ready. That was just before Navin Ramgoolam stormed into a critical meeting that would eventually have given voters -- especially labourites -- a lot more choice on the ballot paper. Ramgoolam essentially said that the governing parties had set a trap and Labour should avoid it. Understand by that that Arvin doesn't have the right profile.

Most kids use cellphones to communicate with friends and family members, not strangers. Most teenagers’ text messages concern everyday topics, and are neutral or positive in content.

Most kids use cellphones to communicate with friends and family members, not strangers. Most teenagers’ text messages concern everyday topics, and are neutral or positive in content. Children with strong early relationships communicated more frequently online and reported closer, more cohesive offline friendships. Young people solicited by strangers online are more likely to struggle with substance use or behavioural problems. Cyberbullying is still less common than traditional bullying.

The Minister of Education has announced the introduction of the Nine-Year Schooling and the abolition of the CPE examination. This news must be music to the ears not only of pupils who are under so much pressure to perform well to gain entry into an elite school but also to parents. But is the music as melodious and soothing as it sounds? More importantly, will the new initiative reduce the present fierce competition at primary level and all its accompanying woes?

Hope never dies. Heightened vibrancy and quality to the debates on inequality remind us of the need to face the neo-liberal hydra that cripples our societies. Socialism, when not anaesthetised can be rendered potent enough to ensure fairness.

In the aftermath of the Global Crisis, some episodes of large depreciations appeared to have had little impact on exports, the depreciation of the yen being the main example. Greater integration in global value chains makes exports substantially less responsive to exchange rate depreciations.

So our Rs10-billion 1982 economy would be about the size of some companies in the latest Top 100 list?

So our Rs10-billion 1982 economy would be about the size of some companies in the latest Top 100 list? And that would be proof that the economy was not going well at all? One absolutely tiny problem with this argument is that we're talking about 1982 rupees here. If we assume that average inflation has been about 5% since then, Rs10 billion in 1982 would now be worth about Rs50 billion. Assume that inflation averaged 7% instead and you get a Rs93-billion economy in aaj ki paisa.

Whatever the label, most countries have schools where most children are from poor families, expectations are low, and teachers are hard to recruit. And in most, the falling prestige of the teaching profession makes matters worse.

Whatever the label, most countries have schools where most children are from poor families, expectations are low, and teachers are hard to recruit. And in most, the falling prestige of the teaching profession makes matters worse. Teach for America (TfA) accepts just one in six applicants. It looks for a stellar academic record and evidence of traits that distinguish the best teachers in tough schools, including leadership, resilience and motivation to help the poor. Now schemes modelled on TfA are spreading around the world.

Just like elementary school children. Those experiences help open their brains in different ways, gets them excited about learning and allows them to have fun.

Just like elementary school children. Those experiences help open their brains in different ways, gets them excited about learning and allows them to have fun. Playful learning can in turn lead to deeper engagement with school, better retention of learning and a stronger motivation to persist all the way through school. The most successful teachers first think critically about the big ideas they want students to walk away with, and then find where those big ideas live in the real world.

The paper said pupils need to be taught skills to deal with controversial issues surrounding belief effectively. Lead author Anna Trethewey explained: "Given the sensitive nature of the issues, bad intercultural education can be worse than no intercultural education at all. Our research uncovered examples of poor intercultural education that only reinforced stereotypes or which took an unbalanced and tokenistic approach. This means helping pupils recognise commonalities but also supporting them to engage in tough conversations about difference."

Don’t misunderstand me: For Zimbabweans, wild animals have near-mystical significance. The American tendency to romanticize animals that have been given actual names and to jump onto a hashtag train has turned an ordinary situation — there were 800 lions legally killed over a decade by well-heeled foreigners who shelled out serious money to prove their prowess — into what seems to my Zimbabwean eyes an absurdist circus.

People on the receiving end of sarcastic comments – and those who made them – were found to be up to three times more creative. Dr Li Huang, who led the research, said: “We found that sarcasm may stimulate the generation of ideas, insights, or problem solutions that are novel and useful. It certainly catalyses a higher form of thought.” Researchers warn that management strategies designed to eliminate sarcasm from workplaces may have detrimental effects on productivity and profits.

About half of the planet’s population today speaks an Indo-European language. How did this single language spread across the word, giving rise to entities as diverse as Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, French, Persian and Bhojpuri? There are two competing hypotheses for the place of origin of Indo-Europeans (or, as they were earlier know, the Aryans). The  HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurgan_hypothesis" \t "_blank" conventional view places their homeland in modern-day Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. It is heart-breaking to read about so many deaths on our roads. Over eighty deaths since the beginning of the year. Grieving families are looking for comfort, accident victims are seeking explanation and justice. To put it simply some are “licensed to kill”, and our roads are death-traps.

Let’s reclaim leadership from the demagogues. Here’s a definition of a demagogue : “a person, especially an orator or political leader, who gains power and popularity by arousing the emotions, passions, and prejudices of the people.”

Let’s reclaim leadership from the demagogues. Here’s a definition of a demagogue : “a person, especially an orator or political leader, who gains power and popularity by arousing the emotions, passions, and prejudices of the people.” They reduce us to being empty, twisted, broken husks of the people we should have been. People who, in the act of wasting their days on spite, greed, envy, and fail to develop, grow, become themselves — and do great and mighty, noble and soaring things. That is why history condemns not just demagogues.

Due to an unusually windy day, wind farms in Denmark managed to produce 140 per cent of the country's electricity needs. 80 per cent of the surplus power was shared between Germany and Norway, with Sweden taking the 20 per cent left over. The figures were noticed by the paper on energinet.dk, a site which shows the power output of Denmark's wind farms in real-time. Oliver Joy, spokesman for the European Wind Energy Association, said: "It shows that a world powered 100 per cent by renewable energy is no fantasy."

It is critical to engage citizens in internalising the role of the rule of law as the foundation of our very existence. We won't move forward should we either allow binary mindsets and partisan politics overwhelm us or continue to resort to tokenism.

Granted the respect and trust women and men at the top of institutions command is key. The relevance of leading by example can never be more emphasised. Mutual cynicism is not productive, is it? However the concept of rule of law is much more far-reaching.

Not only are convenience aka "combini" stores found on almost any corner, they provide healthy meals, ticket concierge (transportation, entertainment, sports – you name it!), and best of all, takkyubin, a delivery service allowing travellers to send their luggage to destinations or the airport in advance.

Zara Currimjee of Poste Lafayette and Vanina Harel of Mt. Choisy have brought their film-making and environmental expertise together with the goal of telling the story of the Mauritian lagoon through the eyes of a local fisherman.
