Few countries are at greater risk from man-made climate change than Mauritius. The Maldives may be more dependent on their beaches and Bangladesh on its agricultural land, but can we afford to lose either?

Few countries are at greater risk from man-made climate change than Mauritius. The Maldives may be more dependent on their beaches and Bangladesh on its agricultural land, but can we afford to lose either? Low lying countries and island states are quite rightly joining their voices this week at Rio+20 to call for global agreements to cut greenhouse gas emissions. So why is our government undermining the cause by repeatedly declaring its commitment to coal?

With five months down already, 2012 is set to be a landmark year on several fronts. Political pundits surely followed the recent shift of regime in France, and will have their attention focused on the US in November. In sports, England will be the centre of attraction during the forthcoming summer Olympic Games, while soccer fans already saw the crowning of new Champions: Zambia and Chelsea, amongst others. Surely, they would enthusiastically be following the 'Euro 2012' tournament during this month.

A home, an ingredient, a solvent, a product, a natural resource, a coolant, a nutrient, a beverage, a chemical, a transport medium, a cleaning agent, a breeding ground, an offering to God…what exactly is my multifaceted subject ?

The far-sighted National Development Strategy superbly integrated policies for land use and transport. Unfortunately, politicians ignored it and implemented half-baked projects in response to oligarchic lobbies and contemporary crises rather than future needs.

The far-sighted National Development Strategy superbly integrated policies for land use and transport. Unfortunately, politicians ignored it and implemented half-baked projects in response to oligarchic lobbies and contemporary crises rather than future needs. This follows the sad precedent of dismantling Mauritius' extensive railway network, which used to link not only Port Louis with the towns of Plaines Wilhems, but also Mahébourg, Souillac, Tamarin, Flic-en-Flac, Pamplemousses, Rivière du Rempart, Flacq and GRSE.

Martin Luther King aptly pointed out that peace is not about the absence of conflicts but the presence of justice. And justice, it has often times been said, can only be seen and felt when there is development for all, development seen and understood as freedoms – freedom from illiteracy, from disease, from malnutrition, from homelessness, from violence, from sexual abuse, from hunger and exploitation.

And justice, it has often times been said, can only be seen and felt when there is development for all, development seen and understood as freedoms – freedom from illiteracy, from disease, from malnutrition, from homelessness, from violence, from sexual abuse, from hunger and exploitation. Such development can contribute to preventing discontent from manifesting itself in all shapes and forms.

I imagine this could be written by some species who will take over the ‘world’ once it has disappeared as we know it… something like in those apocalyptic movies where there is nothing left but that one being standing, taking stock of what has become of the world it once knew.

It is always sad to throw away all these beautiful greetings cards after the festivity period. What a waste of money ? Not to mention the harm to our forests by cutting trees to make cards and envelopes.

Now 25 years since my Econometrics Study of Energy Demand for Mauritius joined a new scientific lineage of UK Energy Economics research that broke ground in highlighting Developing economies emphasis on an Energy economy rooted in efficiency of energy use and energy intensities, and financial burden minimisation of hefty energy imports bills and its incidence both on balance of payments parameters and environmental considerations.

Coral reefs near Mauritius and elsewhere in the world continue to be stressed by rising water temperatures, overfishing and other factors, according to a new study by an international group of marine experts.

But long term prospects for the reefs around Mauritius are good, as long as they are properly managed and protected.

At 71, Yacoob Ghanty has produced his sixth work titled : 1000 years of Conflict. It has been a laborious effort of research spread over years all noted and piled in his “carnet la boutique”. The sources are rich and varied : Weeklies such as Newsweek and Time, History books, Memoirs, Biographies and Cabinet papers, all publications of the Western world.

As food security is becoming a critical issue of international debates, many countries are working on innovative methods to tackle food challenges in order to respond to future supply and demand for food.  One of such methods is aquaponics which allows production of fish and vegetables by the ton in a relatively smaller space with minimum input.  Aquaponics uses between 80% to 90% less water than traditional growing methods.  The system has been designed in such a way that it does not discharge water, but rather recirculate and reuse it.  Water is only added to replace water loss from absorption plants or evaporation into the air.  Hence, there is a growing interest in this system in areas with water shortages and land scarcity.

A recent tragic road accident raises questions about the temporary 3rd lane on the motorway for those driving to Port Louis in the morning. The vehicle density to and from the capital between 7.30 and 9.00 and between 15.50 and 18.00 is considerable and the improvised lane purporting at alleviating traffic provoked by an estimated fleet of 40,000 vehicles entering and leaving Port Louis at that time is not approved by many a road user !

In the equation on food security, the focus of the debate has been mainly on the effects of global warming, climate change, severe droughts, flash floods, accelerated urbanisation, marginalisation of farmers, phyto-sanitary challenges, inequity in technology diffusion, expensive bank collaterals, soaring oil prices and shift to biofuels. However, less attention seems to  be given to the consequences of surging prices of phosphate rock. Little thought has been given in understanding how the underlying link between phosphate rock and global food security can contribute to mitigate the future food crises.

The challenges facing us are great, but then so are the opportunities: never before have we had so much knowledge to take crucial policy decisions, with so much capacity to act.
