Gratitude to Emancipators Manilal Doctor and Adolphe de Plevitz

Beekrum’s Mauritius Times (MT) came out in special edition on 3rd February 1956 in homage to Manilal Doctor (1881-1956), who had battled for Indo-Mauritians’ uplift on all fronts (1907-1911), following his death a week earlier. It was the country’s first tribute paid to Mahatma Gandhi’s envoy. By 1959, Beekrum convened a meeting at the Hindu MahaSabha’s seat to set up the Manilal Doctor Memorial Committee.

Our Island might be a small dot on the world map but it has many a great reason to amaze the world. For instance, Mauritius is one of the rare nations capable of tracing back the name, history and burial place of its first official registered birth on its soil ! Can the French, the British or the Chinese show us the grave of the very first man born on theirs ?

I was barely 13 in the early 60s. Despite a fair amount of homework assigned by my Irish teachers, I seldom missed the local radio MBS (Mauritius Broadcasting Service) Sunday evening entertainment programme ‘Top Twenty’ which was presented by John Poulter and John Cordeaux. It was very much part of the additional exposure to the broader blossoming contemporary youth culture which was simply not found in our school textbooks.

When President  Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 critics asked on what basis the decision was made. Obama had just started serving as the first black President of the United States and pledged to create a new climate in international relations. The Nobel Prize Committee put a high premium on Obama, praising him for “his promotion of nuclear of non proliferation and his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people.” Can one say he was rewarded in anticipation? Let us  look at Obama’s recent mega diplomatic successes in Cuba and Iran.

The Chagos case was longer in headlines since quite a while. Things suddenly changed when this celebrity joined this ‘cause’. Which triggers me to ask, is celebrity public relations still cogent in contemporary society? News items prove it ‘yes’!

Thaippoosam Kaavadi Thiruvizha is a religious festival of prayers and sacrifices normally celebrated in January/February (Thai), when the full moon more or less coincides with the appearance of Murugap Peroumaan’s Star (Poosam).
With Chitirai Powrnami Kaavadi which is celebrated in April/May, it is among the most important religious ceremonies practiced by Mauritians whose ancestors hailed from Tamil Nadu.

The series Z2D at the Mauritius Archives record the arrivals of all individuals coming to Mauritius as passengers during the nineteenth century; hence the term passenger immigrant is used. Flipping through the pages of these documents, a fair amount of Indians – both Hindus and Muslims – came as free passenger immigrants. Their names were often bastardized by British immigration officers. Unlike indentured Indians who were given a number and can therefore be traced at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI), the tracing of passenger Indians can prove to be extremely laborious and sometimes impossible at the Archives. The passenger register for the early twentieth century can be less daunting.

This article is a tribute to Abdool Rahman Toonah (1895-1965), a genuine Bhandari of patriarch-style who we affectionately called "Dada" (Grand-father). Without any child to inherit from and emulate him, he transmitted his knowledge and techniques of cooking Biryani to a handful of privileged disciples of Triolet who have upheld his culinary skills till today.

Thanks to Mahatma Gandhi, by 1921 the Indian National Congress (INC) was a revitalised national party which he chaired from 1924 to 1929. Its tricolour national flag became popular countrywide. There was consistency concerning slogans, policy and ideology. Hindi or Hindustani was gaining ground across India, while the INC followers adopted the khadi.

There is a vibrant buzz on Facebook at the moment, where users are requested to post a list of their top ten favourite books.  This has been an opportunity to discover a whole world of new books and authors and to hopefully help perpetuate the reading culture further. On my list, I included ‘Haroun and The Sea of Stories’ (1990) by Salman Rushdie.

In his last play The Tempest, which represents his final message to humanity, the great William Shakespeare pictures himself as Prospero the wise man. Prospero has acquired wisdom after having gone through many trials and conflicts. Shakespeare makes Prospero welcome his daughter Miranda emerging from the sea like a goddess, symbol of purity, sincerity, and he addresses her as “the brave new world”.

What a long journey Pete Seeger’s life has been! Not tedious or jaded at all, but full of excitement and wondrously spent as a determined optimist unceasingly championing folk music and social change. This folklorist companion of Woody Guthrie was a singer, songwriter/song collector, 5-string banjo and 12-string guitar player who was inducted by his parents but opted early for a roving lifestyle steeped in rural traditions. He typically enjoyed singing along at rallies and concerts and was infectious at that, displaying a deep sense of community living and commitment to social and environmental issues despite his venerable age. He became the mentor of younger topical folk singers and musicians: the Kingston Trio, Trini Lopez, Peter, Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, the Byrds, Don McLean, Bruce Springsteen…

AS IT IS, THANKS TO OUR AFRICAN, INDIAN, CHINESE AND EUROPEAN ANCESTORS….OUR TINY COUNTRY IS BLESSED WITH THE GREATEAST RELIGIONS AND TRADITIONS OF THE WORLD. Along with Christmas and Eid Ul-Fitr, the forthcoming Divali – on next 3rd Nov. – is widely considered and celebrated as one of the most popular festivals in this part of the planet. With time, this festival of lights has verily turned more social than religious.

AS POINTED OUT IN THE LAST THREE VIEWPOINTS, MAHATMA GANDHI DOES NOT BELONG TO INDIA ONLY. HISTORY TELLS US that he indeed forms part of the select or restricted social group of world revolutionaries: who are all born, bred and groomed by prevailing local harsh circumstances to liberate their people – and that by breaking many shackles of repression.

Return to India after apprenticeship in South Africa
Following his apprenticeship during 21 years, though not spent continuously, in South Africa where he self-trained in legal practice, public speech making, journalism, writing generally, spirituality, ahimsa and satyagraha, fasting for the public and negotiation with authorities, besides courting imprisonment for public cause, Gandhi returned home in 1915.
