“I am also pleased to announce that the MID process has now reached its final stage.  In fact, the publication of the national policy and strategy as well as the 3-Year Action Plan is awaited during the coming weeks.  This Policy Document will help to showcase Mauritius as an environmentally dedicated Small Island Developing State at the Rio+20 Conference, scheduled for the 21 June this year.  The conference will also be an opportunity to seek the support of the international community in our quest of making Mauritius a world model of sustainable development. “

Mr. Olivier Poivre d’Arvor, a descendant of the great Pierre Poivre, was a speaker at the French Ambassador’s residence on Tuesday last on “Ile Maurice vue de France”.  According to the Guest, the image of the Eiffel Tower comes to mind when one speaks of France and the Reggae music is associated with Jamaica. The question he threw to the floor was what image we are preparing to be linked with Mauritius. Joel de Rosnay, a surprise attendee enthusiastically proposed the concept of Maurice Ile Durable, the pioneer vision to produce 45% of our energy from renewable resources by 2040. He added that this was a pet project of our PM who coined a slogan: if Mauritius can, the world can”.

The countdown to the budget 2012/2013 has started and it is already looking quite bleak. Current figures are terrifying and we, at the Ralliement Citoyen Pour La Patrie (RCP) are worried for the future generation. Let us not forget that it is our children who will be paying for all the debts that we are incurring. We propose that we prepare our future generation to assume their responsibilities so that they can face the tough reality that awaits them. We also aim to propose a few measures to reduce unemployment rate.

Dear MCB Friends,
Allow me to congratulate your venerable institution on your forthcoming 175th anniversary. I read with much interest your “Make a Wish” challenge to primary schools to think about the “Maurice Ile Durable” initiative, specifically how they would align themselves with the cherished goal of sustainability in resources and the environment.

“A guide to the whales and dolphins of Mauritius” is the title of a booklet released by the Mauritius Marine Conservation Society last week. This work intends to create awareness among the public at large about cetaceans, [whales and dolphins], their habitat, their importance and the photographs used are meant to identify each mammal.

Agenda 21, an outcome of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992, is an action plan of the United Nations related to sustainable development. One of the imperatives of Agenda 21, of which Mauritius is signatory, is the Environmental Assessment of all decision making pertaining to land use. Many texts refer to sustainability or sustainable development as a term that emerged in the 1980s with World Conservation Strategy and the United Nations’ concern over the degradation of the environment and rising pollution. Yet it is to be noted that the concept of sustainability existed much earlier.
