The Minister of Finance, in his latest Budget Speech, announced the introduction of the Nine Year Schooling and the abolition of the CPE examination. This must be music to the ears of not only pupils who are under so much pressure to perform well to gain entry into an elite school but also parents. While the modalities of the national assessment such as the syllabus, training of teachers, formulation of specimen question papers and their validation are being worked out, sceptics are bound to question the timing of this initiative.

The battle of Karbala fought in 680 A.D, is regarded as one of the most horrifying events in the history of Islam.  This event is commemorated the world over by Muslims during the first ten days of the first month of (Muharram) of the Islamic calendar.  Muslims commiserate the innocent “few” who were mercilessly killed by “evil” many. Hussein, may Allah be pleased with him, Grandson of Prophet Muhammad (P.b.u.h), shines in the galaxy of such heroic souls as Socrates and Jesus who safeguarded the honour of humanity by sacrificing their own lives.  Hussein’s sincere heart and noble spirit which were burning with the fire of truth and justice could not tolerate the sublime principles of the noble faith being dashed to the ground at the hands of a wicked and degenerate despot who was bent upon converting the high office of the caliphate into a ruthless inhuman and corrupt monarchy.  The blood that Hussein shed on the battlefield immortalized his name.

The Honorable Minister Xavier-Luc Duval presented his third budget and set out a strategy to put Mauritius back on a path of long term growth through further diversification of the economy, without forgetting the less fortunate. This vision would be achieved through an agenda focused on the enhancement of national productivity and more efficient delivery of public services. The outcome would be better growth, investment, and job creation.

The debate on whether the Mauritius Prime Minister should participate in the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Sri Lanka is becoming more vociferous as Tamil organisations, the Opposition and human right movements are uniting their forces to stop the Prime Minister from going to Colombo. He made up his mind months ago and will not change his decision.

HEALING INJUSTICE?

Government has a commitment to a Welfare Economics policy that secures basic living conditions for 1.2 million population with a stable birth rate. 1968 to 2013 is a long enough period of our economic history to draw lessons, and shape our economic and socioeconomic policies rooted firmly in those issues.

What does the annual real GDP growth rate of almost 4 per cent for the 5-year period mean? This growth rate is an overall average figure for all incomes in the economy. It includes the growth rates of profits of all firms including public sector bodies like the BoM, banks and insurance companies and incomes of all in the professional class, too.

Bean-counters' answer to their own manufactured lie was a promise of robust growth rates if we reduced taxes by 50%. That -- as expected -- didn't happen. They said well it's because of the financial crisis. Not really, the mess we're in was hatched in Mauritius: our economy didn't rebound in 2010 when the rest of the world did. Besides 57 countries had better growth rates than us in the first three years of the reforms -- which include, by the way, the years of 'early harvest' and 'bumper crop'.

Yields in bond markets are an important indicator of future economic performance. Right now bond markets in major financial markets have an almost flat yield curve, reflecting uncertainty regarding economic recovery. An inverted yield curve, that is, higher yield on the short end of the market and lower yield on the longer end of the market almost always signal the imminence of an economic recession. We do not have a bond market in Mauritius. Instead, the interest rate structure on bank deposits in Mauritius offers a good proxy for what would have been a yield structure if we had a bond market.

« What did I tell you last week ? I was a little bit worried since we broke from draw nine, but classwise, no horse in the field would have beaten him today. I wanted the race to be a true-run one. The best horse won.» C’est en ces termes qu’Andrew Fortune s’est adressé à nous à l’issue de la journée.

It is an established procedure, in Mauritius, for an accused individual to be ordered to deposit a sum of money, or a security,  in addition to an acknowledgement of debt , commonly referred to as “reconnaissance de dette “ (RD) to obtain release on bail.

It is an established procedure, in Mauritius, for an accused individual to be ordered to deposit a sum of money, or a security,  in addition to an acknowledgement of debt , commonly referred to as “reconnaissance de dette “ (RD) to obtain release on bail. I say at the outset: I am not a lawyer, but my common sense tells me that this is unjust  and I wish to express my opinion, as a citizen, with a view to creating  awareness  and hopefully initiate a debate.

Democracy is meaningless if the citizens of the country in question are desperately looking for jobs, for greater accountability and transparency, for voice and justice. Poverty goes beyond the dimensions of income and consumption, to include risks and vulnerabilities, voicelessness and powerlessness.

Democracy is meaningless if the citizens of the country in question are desperately looking for jobs, for greater accountability and transparency, for voice and justice. Poverty goes beyond the dimensions of income and consumption, to include risks and vulnerabilities, voicelessness and powerlessness. For a democracy to be meaningful therefore; citizens should have the possibility to fully participate in decisions affecting their lives.

The 17th of October is “World Poverty Day.” Poverty is a widespread phenomenon confronted by countries across the world. Every year, on the occasion of World Poverty Day, the authorities tell us how much they are doing for the poor. But despite this, we find that poverty particularly among women, is growing in the country.

There is a clear debate on the indebtedness in the private sector. According to the World Bank figures, in Mauritius, there has been a considerable increase from 84.8% (2008) to 100.7% (2012) in the level of domestic credit to private sector as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Port Louis, 8 October : Working with survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) is like handling broken crystals. Helping to put all the pieces back together is both rewarding and challenging. But, after one week of working with some brave women I have witnessed these pieces forming a whole again. A week of entrepreneurship training coupled with love and care, helped remind them that self-esteem, agency and change is achievable.
