Since the early days of the coming into operation, the contribution of the national airline in the socio-economic development of the country has been tremendous.
Of late the national airline like many other airlines in the world has been facing economic difficulties. Can the trend be overturned? With creativity and proactive policies for sure the airline can do much better. Part of the problem is that tourism authorities have not been acting holistically in trying to be innovative like South Korea, Thailand, Seychelles etc to get more tourists in the country.

I am ashamed today of being Mauritian. I didn't ever think that was possible... truly. I am ashamed precisely since Sunday, since the moment I discovered in shock and sadness that something that calls itself a 'newspaper' in Mauritius has managed to stoop to the lowest, lowest form of what can no longer be called 'journalism' but plain and simple business.

As a matter of fact, on the day it was announced that honeymooner Michaela Harte was murdered in Mauritius, I was running in a lovely park in the county of Monaghan, Southern Ireland. That winter, Irish Christmas had been magic.

As a matter of fact, on the day it was announced that honeymooner Michaela Harte was murdered in Mauritius, I was running in a lovely park in the county of Monaghan, Southern Ireland. That winter, Irish Christmas had been magic. The Winter Wonderland I had witnessed did undermine 'cliché-ism': we had been granted with a crystal white, snowy, slippery, cold and beautiful winter during that same Irish December. I recall coming back from my long run with a frozen body carrying a warm and merry heart, only to be told the terrible news by my hosts.

Should it really be surprising that ten years after the inception of ICAC, the last report from Transparency International indicates that the perception of corruption in Mauritius is gaining ground?

Dans un long texte de 31 pages, soit près de 15 000 mots ('Who owns Diego Garcia ? Decolonisation and Indigenous Rights in the Indian Ocean', The Western Australia Law Review, June 2012), Me Geoffrey Robertson, QC, qu'on ne présente plus, revient sur l'épineux dossier des Chagos et les tractations qui ont mené à l'excision illégale d'une partie de l'archipel par le gouvernement britannique avant d'octroyer l'Indépendance à Maurice, et ce afin de permettre aux États-Unis d’aménager une base militaire sur l'atoll de Diego Garcia.

As year after year, beauty competitions are organized during flashy, champagne-drizzled glamorous evenings in order to find the 'most beautiful woman' of the country, world or universe, the questions which have been bugging me persistently are : What is the purpose of these beauty pageants and what have been the outcomes ?

Efforts to pass legislation in the U.S. Congress that would offer a life-line to countries like Mauritius that export apparel and textile products to the United States under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) suffered a setback last week.

Just a week ago, African ministers attending the annual African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Forum in Washington, were optimistic that the issue would be resolved before Congress took a brief recess for the July 4th Independence Day holiday.

The Mauritius Turf Club is celebrating these days the 200 th anniversary of it's foundation. Rightly, or wrongly, the name of Colonel Edward Alured Draper is closely link to the MTC since 1812.

To such extend that another street street is being name after that colonel who also happened to be the third British military to be in charge of the island's Police Force. May be horse racing here has got a lot to owe to dear Draper as do the written press to Adrien d'Epinay — who was his very close friend — but one thing is for sure, Mauritius is probably the unique country in the world where open advocates of slavery — a crime against Humanity — are still being honoured ! Here is the other story of Colonel Draper which is worth  be known...

There is an enormous hurdle to the sustainable use of our arable lands, whether for energy crops, food production or even reforestation: our agricultural activity over the last half-century has significantly reduced soil fertility.

There is an enormous hurdle to the sustainable use of our arable lands, whether for energy crops, food production or even reforestation: our agricultural activity over the last half-century has significantly reduced soil fertility. Before being cultivated, these lands had been self-sustaining, closed-cycle ecosystems for millions of years. The nutrients that vegetation extracted from the soil were returned to it through the decay of dead branches, leaves and fruit.

God damn it, what are we doing, people? We are a great nation, we truly are all smart fellas, and we have come a long way from rough seas and tough beginnings to greener pastures. And we have great aims for our country and plan to go far, to be an advanced, high income country.

The list of kids spoilt by politics is very long but these are some of the most notorious ones who never miss an opportunity to make headlines. Self-proclaimed as the protector and the voice of their community, those leaders of some socio-cultural associations have been the source of disturbance in our society for years and encouraged by some politicians.

Self-proclaimed as the protector and the voice of their community, those leaders of some socio-cultural associations have been the source of disturbance in our society for years and encouraged by some politicians. On paper, some of them claim to preach non-violence but in reality, they are thugs or appoint thugs as bodyguards and even think they can replace the Police Force by making their own landings and investigations.

Recently I heard the Ag. Prime Minister (PM) saying that a post in the top hierarchy of a governmental body has not been filled yet because the present government was looking for a “world class” director. This is the first time and it won't be the last neither, as Mauritian authorities have caught with the trend of 'looking for foreign' when it comes to important positions, consultant work, advice, etc.

Taking a step back from my personal implications in the forthcoming cessation of tobacco leaf purchase by the British American Tobacco (hereinafter, 'BAT') I honestly doubt the awareness of people as to this matter - it is just a personal opinion and anyone can disagree with me.  Putting myself in the reasonable man's shoes, the one who is not related to the tobacco industry, I should admit that I find this unawareness totally normal as the reasonable person cannot be expected to be a jack of all trades.  Therefore, in order to raise public awareness, I believe that I

Mauritius has recently been hit by a surprising sequence of atrocious murders, particularly shocking the population because of the barbarity which characterised some of the killings. Although crime rate itself has been dwindling in Mauritius, it remains that criminals such as murders seem to be ready to go ahead with the act without seemingly affected by the consequences of a conviction. It is thus the aspect of deterrence in the criminal system which might need to be improved.

A lot of debate recently took place concerning the setting up of the new “Université des Mascareignes” positioned as the third public university that Mauritius aims at having in the near future.  Arguments favoured by the Ministry of Tertiary Education focused on the need to broaden tertiary education perspectives for Mauritian students with a view to having “one graduate per family”, the slogan run by the government so far.  It meant democratising access to higher level education to a larger number of students who, previously, were denied from such
