As a young aspiring woman, I feel very concerned about the land question. The TJC report has shown the complexity surrounding the land issue. Who owned land, who stole lands and from whom etc. are questions that have to some extent been looked into by the commission. But opacity persists around the land question. Can we speak of Truth and Justice when there is so much opacity ?

The government has its back against the wall. It knows, nay, it fears that its future might be in jeopardy.  And rightly so, the political happenings have troubled the P.M and it shows. This is probably the governing alliance’s most ardent effort to turn back the tide and salvage its present mandate. A new covenant with the people; nothing less than an invitation to renew our trust in our leaders is being offered to us. Yet, it fails to convince.
It’s only words

The far-sighted National Development Strategy superbly integrated policies for land use and transport. Unfortunately, politicians ignored it and implemented half-baked projects in response to oligarchic lobbies and contemporary crises rather than future needs.

The far-sighted National Development Strategy superbly integrated policies for land use and transport. Unfortunately, politicians ignored it and implemented half-baked projects in response to oligarchic lobbies and contemporary crises rather than future needs. This follows the sad precedent of dismantling Mauritius' extensive railway network, which used to link not only Port Louis with the towns of Plaines Wilhems, but also Mahébourg, Souillac, Tamarin, Flic-en-Flac, Pamplemousses, Rivière du Rempart, Flacq and GRSE.

L’Association des Consommateurs de l’île Maurice (ACIM), à travers son porte-parole Jayen Chellum, a tenu un point de presse hier matin pour commenter la question du prix du ciment. Elle rappelle qu’en juillet 2011, la Competition Commission of Mauritius (CCM) avait recommandé la libéralisation du prix du ciment et soutient que celle-ci « has got the direct responsibility vis-à-vis the consumers to initiate action for Government to reconsider its position. »

Lately, Tom Cruise’s teenage character in the 1983 movie, Risky Business, has been coming back to my mind repeatedly. In the movie, Tom wins the confidence of his parents that he can look after himself while they are away. Soon after his parents leave, Tom calls in a hooker, wines and dines with borrowed money, throws out an out-of-control party, has his mum’s precious belongings and family’s furniture stolen by a pimp and thrashes his father’s Porsche. Out went an effective oversight and in came an orgy of unrestrained risky business.

For some time now, Air Mauritius is declining fast due to its instability over the past few years. It has a great record of financial losses. Many of its sub branches across Europe have already been closed down. The quality of its services too is deplorable despite lots of warnings by a former Minister of Tourism to the Prime Minister regarding the decline of Air-Mauritius.

Or imagine: you are called to a meeting at your workplace, where your bosses tell you that the entire territory has been “closed”, so you will lose not only your job, but also your home, most of your belongings, and the right to live in your homeland.

There is often a complaint that there is a lack of entertainment in Mauritius. These days, this complaint is not justified at all.

There is often a complaint that there is a lack of entertainment in Mauritius. These days, this complaint is not justified at all. When there is a live show going on in the form of local politics, who needs other forms of entertainment? Isn't it commonplace these days to say 'manz pistas guet sinema' while watching the political actors performing their parts on different stages? The name of the play, if one was to be chosen: Respect, we have none!

The case of the Chagos islands and its people is now at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

The case of the Chagos islands and its people is now at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. Either the Court will decide it does not have jurisdiction to hear the case and thus declare it inadmissible or it will decide it is admissible and give judgment. If admissible, the overall judgment is likely to favour the Chagossians since it is self evident that the UK is in breach of one or more of the articles of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The Chagos Islands represents a historical episode out of which none of the governments involved comes out well. As we now know, some 2000 people who had lived on those islands for many generations were viciously expelled and unceremoniously dumped on the quayside in Mauritius and the Seychelles.

The season of political instability has been inaugurated in Mauritius. So have the musical chairs. The poachers are spending sleepless nights, the Opposition is threatening the ruling party with a [successful] motion of no confidence, and the survival in office of the LP is the new name of the game. Bérenger is unbeatable: he is the unique leader who publicises his tactics to overthrow his rival. We are supposed to believe that this conflict among the contenders for power is in the national interest, for the security of the Mauritians, for the independence of the ICAC and for the prosperity of the citizen.

I woke up on Monday morning and started humming 'Glo o o ry to thee' followed by the French version “Gloire à toi Ile Maurice”. My voice reached a crescendo at the words “comme un seul peuple, une seule nation, en paix, justice et liberté” and for one minute I felt proud to be an independent Mauritian, although miles away from my motherland. But that was it, the sense of patriotism didn't last more than one minute. I think I know why.

These days, raising awareness for different causes has become mainstream on Facebook. From political transgressions to atrocities on individuals and lately the now notorious Joseph Kony, it has become much easier to rally people for causes. Locally, Lamars 10 Mars would have gone pretty quickly from public memory had it not been for the arrest of two of the 'marchers'. Both causes however show that the road is very long if we want a more engaged society.

From the Divine throne above, Mauritius came to be known as Paradise on earth, for a new Adam and a new era. But alas, with time, the Paradise is losing its purity, is losing its beauty…
Despite being known in the four corners of the earth, yet Mauritius remains prisoner to its own demons, wanting to snatch away the paradisiacal aura which has remained since ages its stamp of recognition.

With the implied and even active support of the Mauritian political class and through electors' behaviour, communalism will enter the Mauritian political lexicon with official recognition of four distinct communities : Hindus, Muslims, Chinese, and anybody not fitting in those three to a group euphemistically called General Population. Not only communalism but also casteism and, to cap it all, a clear demarcation of Hindus into Hindi-speaking and non-Hindi-speaking Hindus (Tamils, Telegu and Marathis).
