Amidst all the pomp and fanfare, disgruntled voices managed to seep to the top and made themselves heard. In 1965, the UK excised the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius to create a new colony, the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), so that the largest of the 55 islands, Diego Garcia, could be developed as a US base. In the process the population of 1,500 Ilois were removed from their homeland and dumped in Mauritius and Seychelles. Since the 54 outer islands have never been required for defence purposes what is stopping the Government allowing Chagossians to return for visits or to resettle there?

What should a University do when the Minister of Tertiary education decides to make of its country an Education Hub by attracting students from abroad?

What should a University do when the Minister of Tertiary education decides to make of its country an Education Hub by attracting students from abroad? In the case of Mauritius, we fabricate a man-made crisis: we are endowed with infinite ability to create a drama out of nothing. The top brass at Réduit have succeeded skillfully in turning our nation’s attention from the good news that the Heritage Foundation has upgraded us to the 8th position on its list of progressive economies to focus on the dirty linens being washed on the campus.

Does Mr Vayid remember what he was on about in his before-last reply of the 30th December 2011 ?
Let us concentrate only on the most enormous and important of his several clangers.

It is said that when a hurricane approaches and all animals in the jungle start running around in search of safe places to hide, the daring African tiger chooses this particular moment of common anxiety to come out of its den, sharpen its flair for opportunities and stand ready to capture its prey with mastery and relative ease.

The making and enforcing of rules governing cooperative human behaviour is where social order begins.

The making and enforcing of rules governing cooperative human behaviour is where social order begins. The principle of the rule of law is intended to be a safeguard against arbitrary governance. The rule of law does not operate in absolute terms. It depends on how citizens have internalised it. The behaviour of road users – drivers, riders and pedestrians – can provide a microcosm to gauge the strength of the rule of law. For example it varies considerably according to whether you are in Mauritius, India, Italy or Switzerland.

The new quota system will now require 30% of the candidates to be women and needless to say that the race is wide open, to identify these faces which were formerly overshadowed, in the male-dominated political sphere, if we are candid enough about the political reality here.

Non-interventionism of women in politics is a theme of vital importance for modern Mauritius. Men rule because women let them. Male misogyny is real enough, and it has dreadful consequences, but female misogyny is what keeps women out of power.

Male misogyny is real enough, and it has dreadful consequences, but female misogyny is what keeps women out of power. Let’s realise that women are not inherently passive or peaceful; we’re all not inherently anything, but human.

I am not sure how you all do it but I am not a big fan of Mauritians in the days before X’mas. I am a foreigner now living in Mauritius but of the “wrong” colour although I am not sure if that makes a difference.

I am not sure how you all do it but I am not a big fan of Mauritians in the days before X’mas. I am a foreigner now living in Mauritius but of the “wrong” colour although I am not sure if that makes a difference. Maybe if I shopped in the “right touristy” places, I would get better service but try shopping in Quatre Bornes, in a supposedly “proper” shopping centre & tell me what kind of customer service you experience.

Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

Bob Dylan, The Times They Are Changing:

2011 is almost over. Now that 2012 is dawning upon us, nostalgia beckons. The time is right to indulge in a retrospective of the year gone by.

The leader of the opposition was solicited on a private radio to give his views. Many opinion leaders condemned the slashing of the Best Loser system obviously to curry favour with their electorate while some rejoiced at its death.

The frequent incursions of Politicians in the Cultural and Religious domains and the invasive familiarity of socio-cultural and religious outfits, of all brands, to the Government of the day is a long established practice in the Republic of Mauritius. Often giving rise to acrimonious debates about the pros and cons of such organised proximity. But can the Republic of Mauritius continue to encourage and approve the pernicious socio-cultural and religious influences and interferences that stand in the way of the secular credentials of our Republic ?

Agile, energetic and full of life, this was how Dev Anand appeared on screen in the dark theatres of Mauritius with fans applauding and shouting “Dev Anand Contour”. Could it be a joke or nickname appended by rival fans, the nickname stayed as such so long as Dev enacted fully as actor in his films, several among them being self-directed.

A departing diplomat caused a stir last week with comments on a bunch of non-integrating expats from his country, currently colonizing parts of our rainbow island in a somewhat monochrome manner. I have seen the colonization trend, but thought it was more of an economic endeavour as opposed to a systemic implantation. Apparently it isn't… and the matter is being brought to attention because the neo-colonizers, if I may call them so, aren't quite fitting into the landscape of red, blue, yellow and green…
