When you’re on Facebook and in one of those relationships when you don’t know whether you’re coming or going... this is what the site allows you to put as your relationship status: it’s complicated. Now I think that just being in Mauritius is complicated, with the comings and goings of floor crossers... oops, I mean politicians etc... you know?

Hindi Cinema, named Bollywood since the late 1980s, recently lost an avant-garde artist, Shammi Kapoor, who was one of the favourite matinee idols of moviegoers in India and Mauritius in the 1960s.  The announcement of his demise instantly saddened his fans but did not cause havoc in Indian cinema.  The actor suffered from various ailments in his later years and had since then kept himself away from the film world.

Travelling in towns and villages of Mauritius is a recurrent feature to come across haleem-dealers in street-corners.  Haleem is so well entrenched in the Mauritian tradition that it prominently features in the menu cards or display-boards side by side with boulette chinois and rasson.  Overpowered by the spell of the spicy flavour and savoury taste that keeps the sense of gourmandise high, very few people pay attention to the origin of haleem or ever care to know how it was introduced in Mauritius.

“A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new… India discovers herself again.” – J.L. Nehru. On the eve of India’s independence, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru famous speech “Tryst with Destiny” marked the beginning of a free India with words symbolizing hope and triumph.

Nearly a week after the riots started in London and then spread to other parts of the UK mainland, everyone including politicians and social commentators still seem puzzled at the reasons that lie behind what has taken place.

Our politicians are bankrupt of decency. For many “Moralité pas rempli vante,” “Tout ce qui est légal, n’est pas nécessairement moral,” they say. They do not weigh their words. They say anything and everything against their opponents just to achieve their ends. Then they retract and eat their own words. Some will even go the length of bartering their soul to the devil.

That's what I conclude from skimming through his latest PBB circular No 7. In it, he is saying that the economy is not growing as fast as expected so that he now wants to introduce and/or raise user fees. Because, he adds, there is limited scope for raising taxes if we don't want to scare off private domestic investment and FDI. Well, we know for a fact that the Rs 40 billion of FDI we received after taxes were slashed by 50% didn't make a difference in the lives of a supermajority of Mauritians. For five straight years. So that's a spurious argument at best.

At first glance, culture and religion might seem to be intricately connected. However, with a deeper exploration, culture and religion seem to be separated by a great divide. First of all, we need to know what culture means. Culture can be defined in many ways but the one that suits this context pertains to “the customs, institutions and achievements of a particular nation, people or group” (Oxford English Dictionary) while religion is defined as a particular system of faith and worship.

THE FACTS
1. The hotels are complaining that they are at 30% load factor whereas the airlines are running at 80% load factor. The airline’s load factors look high because they MODULATE capacity throughout the year. In peak season they put extra flights and in off-peak they reduce the number of flights whereas the hotels rooms cannot be modulated. People will not jump in empty aircraft as the hôteliers say.

In mid-August, H.E. the High Commissioner of India will be completing his term of service in Mauritius and farewell parties are being thrown to wish him well in his new assignment, whatever and wherever that will be. As a seasoned Diplomat, he will fit in any situation.

Our expectations of India are very ambitious: many Mauritians feel they belong also to India where they have studied or have traced back their roots or have graduated in various fields of expertise. India has a soft corner for us for historical and cultural reasons.

The University of Mauritius is at the moment the only tertiary institute based in Mauritius which offers affordable degree programmes in such fields as history and politics. It is undoubtedly a boon for young people to have access to such courses and it is a positive stance adopted by the UoM. However, the subject criteria at A-Levels for a degree in Political Science would tend to prevent others who are genuinely interested in the betterment of their country to gather theoretical knowledge in this field. At the moment, to be eligible for this course, the following subjects are deemed as being relevant ; History, Sociology, Languages (English, French), Indian Languages (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu), Geography, Hinduism, Islamic Studies, Economics and Law.

Marchands goni (collectors of gunny sacks) have disappeared from the Mauritian folklore. On surface it would appear to be a trivial trade, but indeed it had strong ramifications in the Mauritian society. The marchands goni used to go from shop to shop and house to house to collect used gunny sacks and sell them to large firms which badly needed them to pack their goods. Many people willing to get rid of the used sacks from their store, would give them away for free to the marchands goni. Very few could imagine that such an inexpensive commodity was, in fact, a lucrative business which created millionaires.

In Mauritius, like in many democratic and capitalist countries, we have a system where a Government, an Opposition and a local Government are elected by the people through free and fair elections every five years and during their five year-mandate, the elected members of the Parliament, Municipalities and District Councils have the duty to serve the people, to protect human rights and most essentially to make sure that Laws and procedures are being applied without prejudice ; no one is above the Law and no one should be favoured in any direct or indirect manner on the ground of his status.

Politics and politicians, topics that never fail to elicit conversation, discussions and fights even. What is it about these people and their actions that make them so popular in Mauritius ? Politicians exist all over the world. However, it would seem that only in Mauritius do we elevate them so such heights that they think they are kings of the world in true Leonardo DiCaprio style in Titanic.

Since it is now a pleasure to read the paper version (internet) of Le Mauricien, it takes me double the time to go through it. On Friday, it actually took me thrice the time. Going through Forum Kreol took me easily half an hour to read through. I will be the first to admit it: when all the debate about standardising the Kreol language was raging, I was among those who thought that it was a waste of time since that language cannot bring anything new.

The challenges facing us are great, but then so are the opportunities: never before have we had so much knowledge to take crucial policy decisions, with so much capacity to act.
