The world today is facing a great moral and spiritual crisis. Values have vanished. Hanging high on our heads are sins with no means of atonement. The hatred in our hearts is so strong, so deep-rooted and so hot that the boiling cauldron is explosing. The result is war when what humanity needs is peace. The result is hatred when humanity needs love, the result is bullets when humanity needs food. People who can pray are praying, people who can persuade are persuading, people who can meditate are meditating, each contributing in their own way.

Mauritius should be proud of its relationship with China and not take it for granted. It is not a relationship of former colonial master and servant. It is rather a relationship  based on real friendship that has  got something very spicy, sweet and sour at times, and most of all very special which many African countries  do not and cannot have , although they were as many as 20  to  have established     diplomatic relations  with China long before Mauritius.

No wonder then that our African brothers envy us so much!

There is a vibrant buzz on Facebook at the moment, where users are requested to post a list of their top ten favourite books.  This has been an opportunity to discover a whole world of new books and authors and to hopefully help perpetuate the reading culture further. On my list, I included ‘Haroun and The Sea of Stories’ (1990) by Salman Rushdie.

National unity is another burning issue on which I claim that we have been oiling the engine of destructive creation during the preceding decades. Despite the mushrooming of institutions and generous government subsidies to religious bodies and NGOs, the failures in nation building are ubiquitous.

Introduction
The country’s incremental development runs parallel with the public career in Mauritius of 50 years (1935-1985), since his return home from London until his death, of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) - intimately called Kewal. The world’s first Prime Minister of Indian origin overseas, he was the founder of modern Mauritius. The first to hold in turn all the country’s constitutional political posts, SSR contributed to the voting of laws and regulations as from 1940, while associated with government projects as from 1948.

Comes also in September, on 18th whom Shakespeare would have welcomed thus“Nature stands to say – Here is a man, when comes another” And Ben Johnson would have said
“He was not of an age, but of all time”.

Making sense of contemporary political figures is no easy matter. Not only is there a great amount of historical sources to be digested but the nearness in time does not always allow an
objective evaluation. In the case of Sir Seewoosagur
Ramgoolam, we have to add the dimension of the political and
statesman who dominated the Mauritian political scene for nearly half a century. A career of such breadth and length could only leave materials for diverging interpretations.

Contrary to expectations that the African National Congress (ANC) would gain nearly all the seats at the first democratic elections held in South Africa on 27 April 1994, the party won only 63% of the seats, short of the two thirds majority (67%) required for allowing the party to unilaterally amend the constitution.

Commenting on the results of the elections, Nelson Mandela wrote the following in “Long Walk to Freedom”, his autobiography: “Some in the ANC were disappointed that we did not cross the two thirds threshold, but I was not one of them.

While situations of national crises are difficult to live through, they often announce that structures or behaviour patterns have become obsolete and they turn out to be opportunities that flood our paths with light and hope for the future.

August marked 11 years since I left Mauritius for Ireland, as a newly wed to someone who had studied and was already working there. It was always the plan to settle back in Mauritius, which happened almost two years back. We are often asked the reason of our decision to settle back here, legitimate question for some considering that many are of the opinion that Mauritius has nothing to offer and that ‘abroad’ is the place to be. We are all aware of the great lacks that are present in many sectors of our country, be it in health, education or others.

In the book ‘Pour une même bâtardise’ the great Pierre Renaud wrote an incisive piece of writing on Professor Dad Prithipaul. The writing is brief, but it is packed with humanity and brilliance, reflections on time, life, aesthetics, morality, religion, mysticism and sufism and at the same time visions of the Ulysses-like struggle of the lives of some intellectuals who eventually find solace outside Mauritius, because they are in fact never really ‘wanted’ or taken with the seriousness or respect they deserve.

It’s now been one week we’re on the ground in Apia and have been heavily involved in the conference on numerous levels whether in the Steering or drafting committee or delivering speeches addressing the community. This is a tipping point for our organisation as we share our campaigns with others and is being approached to create symbiotic partnerships with other Civil Society Organisations, and possible partnerships with United Nation (UN) agencies, and others in the Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

  • Le Medical Council : « The University of Technology, Mauritius does not satisfy the requirements of the Medical Council Act for recognition as a medical institution »

Mauritius is indeed an intriguing place at the moment. A private citizen who expresses his views and exercises his right is called a ‘bourik’ by the official but perceived as undeserving, self-serving Leader of Opposition Paul Bérenger.  Jose Moirt, an ordinary voter, has rightly challenged the legitimacy of PB as Leader of Opposition while he has been using his position to negotiate a coalition with PTR so that he can become the next PM.

There is a saying that when somebody goes to the USA for a long term, they are going there to live the “American Dream”.  My Fellowship in the USA has given me the unique opportunity to see what these dreams are.

There is a saying that when somebody goes to the USA for a long term, they are going there to live the “American Dream”.  My Fellowship in the USA has given me the unique opportunity to see what these dreams are. Through my classes, my interaction with the culture, my conversations with American leaders and visionaries, as well as living with amazing young African leaders, I had the chance to appreciate what are the end results of allowing dreams to become a reality, particularly when every man and woman work collaboratively to achieve this.

Given that an analysis of the situation  will only increase  our frustration and  demonstrate our failures,  it is better to be  positive and  look at some possible solutions  which I hope our policymakers  can consider  and  professionals in the field  can respond. I will only briefly highlight  some solutions to trigger  a discussion.
