This article may be considered an addenda or a continuity to our article 'Mauritius independence 1961-1968' published on 9th March 2014. 46 years after, we can remember with a paradoxical mixed-feeling of apprehension, discomfort and delectation at what our colonial masters and colonial political legatees left us. There were mistakes made by both the colonizers and the colonized, the actors and thinkers of the time. Today with the wisdom of hindsight we can look back.

Collaborative leadership is not ‘taking power over’ people but taking power with people.
Employees are our most valuable asset, and if we want to see our profitability increase we will have to let go of our traditional command and control management style and adopt a collaborative leadership style, which will empower our people. Collaborative leadership (CL) requires empathy, motivating, invigorating and agility to adapt.

It is a long established tradition for the government to invite an eminent personality from abroad to be the chief guest at our joint Independence and Republic Day celebrations. A good number of heads of state/government, mostly from India, Africa and Asia have honoured our celebrations, but on a few occasions, we have had non public figures or personalities of lesser importance as our chief guest.

What's the fuss all about ? Who on this planet would dispute that this is an important day for observance. UN resolution 65/309 puts it eloquently : the pursuit of happiness is a universal human goal.

The economics of Welfare State is not an easy reading subject. It's also a touchy subject to bring up for discussions in a public forum. Being perceived as someone hostile to the principles of the Welfare State in the dizzying maze of politics in our democracy is the kiss of death for any politician.

Better, therefore, to have academics and unelected individuals point out that the emperor runs the high risk of having no clothes in the years ahead.

This year we are celebrating the International year for Island biodiversity together with the holding of the SIDS summit in Samoa. Can the Samoa meeting make a difference for SIDS or will it be simply another talk shop? This is the big question.  When we talk about SIDS, we are referring here to 600 million people, nearly 1/10 of the actual population, whose existence and life are becoming dangerous by the doings of other powerful industrial nations. Since the Barbados summit, there have been no serious commitments despite the pledges made by some of these powerful nations.

Mauritius will celebrate its 46th independance anniversary on 12th March tis year. This article starts with the 3rd Mauritius Constitutional Conference of 26th June to 7th July 1961 known as “The Mauritius Review Conference” and terminates with the grant of Independence on 12 March 1968. It is as usual based on declassified papers at the British National Archive (BNA) with a rational analysis of both events and evidence. History has an uncanny way of unfolding and this is apparent with the added benefit of hindsight. We will chapter the road to Independence by looking at the action of different protagonists. We will carefully look at role of, on one side, our colonial masters, British politicians in office and top Whitehall civil servants advising and assisting them and, on the other side, that of our colonial political leaders led by Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) for independence and by Jules Koënig and Gaëtan Duval for integration with the United Kingdom.

Gurujis for students, uncle and aunty for many of us and the Nandkishores for others, have been very active in the musical field of Mauritius. They were delegated by the Indian government to teach the performing arts namely Hindustani classical music and dance in Mauritius through the school of Indian music and dance, which opened on 11th April 1964. In 1975.The school merged into what is now the school of Performing Arts of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute. The school is celebrating its 50 years of existence.

Over the last few years higher education in Mauritius has been plagued by a number of scandals and this is not happy reading especially when we are aspiring to make our island a knowledge hub for higher education in the African region. The magnitudes of these scandals are such that several Committees have been hurriedly set up to investigate the nature of the problems. Hopefully, these Committees will pinpoint what went wrong, why it happened in the first instance and how these kinds of scandals can be avoided in the future. Most importantly, who the culprits are and what actions if any will be taken against them ? Will we be any wiser on the conclusions and recommendations of the various reports or is it another political ploy to fool the public ?

Education. A heartfelt socialist worldwide ambition to get us commoners out of the gutter of poverty.
was a teenager when the Mauritius Labour Party in 1976, in spite of this being called an electoral gimmick, had the guts in very tough political times to implement free education up to tertiary level eventually. I witnessed and shared similar joy when New Labour, under Tony Blair, got rid of 18 years of Conservatism in the UK .' Education, Education, Education.' Yet I am also very aware of socialist Cuba where medical graduates are easier to find than a healthy meal!

Talent management is a relatively new subject area although it has been used and applied by organisations since a long time back.  Seeking talent means trying to find out the best human resources to fit in the needs of the company, be it current or future.  Talent concerns all the skills, knowledge and attitudes that managers expect from the workers but it does not limit itself to these three factors.  Talent has to be first identified and then consistently developed so that it remains an asset for the company in question.  One can then say that most employees are talented because they provide their services in the form of skills and experience to the company aiming at recruiting talented employees.  This is a truthful argument because companies will buy firstly the skills and use them for their own benefit.

Who is licking the wounds and who is licking the chops ? This is not an innocent question that was set to me by an economist at an international institution today, February 12, 2014. In the past few days I received several requests from friends and young professionals in Mauritius to elucidate and re-state the problem of excess liquidity that appears to have emerged as the cause for the cross-firings between the Bank of Mauritius and the Ministry of Finance. It seems confusion has been confounded.

2013 clearly marked the crescendo in LGBTQI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex) rights in various countries - Austria, Brazil, France, a handful of States in the U.S., England and Wales, Germany, New-Zealand and Uruguay. Late Nelson Mandela, father of the “Rainbow Nation” enshrined protection and promotion of LGBTQI rights in the South African Constitution. In India, Rahul Gandhi, Aamir Khan, other prominent figures and civil rights movements vouched for promotion of LGBTQI rights and promotion of consensual anal sex.

Every year tens of thousands of young people arrive on the labour market without the skills required for a fast changing economic environment. The ILO (International Labour Organization) has warned that if the world does not do anything about this, there will be a serious social unrest. The economic crisis that the world has gone through may be easing a little, but a greater crisis – in fact a tragedy – is looming. The figures released by the NESC (National Economic and Social Council) of Mauritius in December 2013 indicate that youth unemployment (between the ages of 16 and 24) constitutes 17% of the total number of people unemployed in Mauritius. Out of the 20,000 young unemployed 5000 are graduates.
