The horrendous crime perpetrated in Paris which led to the death of several journalists and artists has, in general, aroused emotional outbursts, shock, disgust and even anger. It is quite understandable. However we should not allow moral dualism or manichaeism to blind us to the complex nature of any event.

Hajj being the fifth pillar of Islam after Faith, Salat (Prayers), Zakat and Fasting the muslims in Mauritius, every year found themselves in a turmoil to  make the journey to Mecca though they are physically  and financially fit.  The Hajj is a remarkable spiritual gathering of over two million Muslims from all over the world to the holy city. There is definitely a feeling of serious anxiety amongst the Hadj pilgrims 2012 these days. Minister Kasenally announced a few days ago that only 1,300 visas have been granted to Mauritians who intend to go on pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, this year. We are aware that 2,000 pilgrims have expressed the wish, this year, to proceed to Mecca; so what will happen to the remaining 700 pilgrims?

Ramadan is the most sacred time of the year for the world's nearly two billion moslems. The exact date of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the new moon by a trustworthy witness. It normally falls in the ninth month of the Moslem year as prescribed in the Quran.

Week 1 of the Boring Year ending June 2013.
The Mecca of corporate networking is the seminar. People meet, ‘work’ collectively for hours or days on themes that they are not likely to ever come across in their professional careers, they lunch together and try to bond over something…anything for that matter.

Every year the Muslim community of Mauritius commemorates with fanfare and dignity the Yaum un-Nabi (Prophet's Day), which is the celebration of both the birth and death anniversaries of Muhammad (pbuh) – the Prophet of Islam, the last of the revealed religions. The Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) birth and death occurred on the same date.

We made our way into the vast courtyard of the Haram housing the Ka'aba, to perform the umrah (minor hajj) and, in the process, also to get my first physical glimpse of the famous Ka’aba. It was really a mesmerizing moment for me. I felt my heartbeat grow faster and my pulse rise and a strong feeling of awe and excitement gripped me as my eye caught sight of the holiest shrine in Islam – the Ka'aba – of which I had heard and read about so often and which had always held an alluring fascination to my imagination.
