Nine months of expectations, tearing pains to deliver… a soft head coming out, a being of innocence just seeing light. The first cries, tears of joy, holding my little angel close to the heart: a baby is born.

Nine months of expectations, tearing pains to deliver… a soft head coming out, a being of innocence just seeing light. The first cries, tears of joy, holding my little angel close to the heart: a baby is born.

Times oft coming in this new world, either during pregnancy or at birth if not of the mishaps of a day-to-day life that can happen to any of our children; the joys of parents turning dark: our child becomes disabled.

Exhausted? Disbelief? Burn-out? Loss of hope? Pity?

I was barely 13 in the early 60s. Despite a fair amount of homework assigned by my Irish teachers, I seldom missed the local radio MBS (Mauritius Broadcasting Service) Sunday evening entertainment programme ‘Top Twenty’ which was presented by John Poulter and John Cordeaux. It was very much part of the additional exposure to the broader blossoming contemporary youth culture which was simply not found in our school textbooks.

The media world is abuzz with the shocking news which is currently making the headlines everywhere, for the wrong reasons; the brutal killing of Cecil, a 13-year old lion, which also happened to be the most famous one in Zimbabwe.  A resident of the Hwange National Park which is Zimbabwe's largest game reserve, Cecil had achieved an iconic status as a major tourist attraction and was known to be friendly to visitors. His size and singular black mane made him recognisable and to top it all, he was monitored as part of an Oxford University study into lion conservation, according to BBC News sources.

The Chagos case was longer in headlines since quite a while. Things suddenly changed when this celebrity joined this ‘cause’. Which triggers me to ask, is celebrity public relations still cogent in contemporary society? News items prove it ‘yes’!

It is often assumed that the present age is one marked by globalisation.  It constantly reminds its people of the advancement of technology and how it crosses cultural, racial and territorial barriers.  However, in an era where progress seems to be very prevalent, does the notion of cannibalism seem outdated? While it might sound old-fashioned at first, it is actually a phenomenon that is permeating the globe in a rather symbolical way.  As outrageous as it may sound, it paves its way through what could be termed as the “Al-Qaedisation” of the world.

As a humanitarian, Governor Farquhar was concerned about the provision of some form of moral and religious education for the slave population of Port Louis. He realized that Reverend Lebrun had attracted mostly the gens de couleur - the free coloured population - to his school at St George Street. The two other small schools in the Plaine Verte area failed to entice the slave population. The low number of slaves in attendance must have influenced Farquhar in his request for another educator form the missionary societies in Britain in the 1820s. The Governor approached the British Foreign School Society (BFSS) which run non-sectarian schools using the Lancasterian system. We do not know whether he specifically requested for a person of African origin. In November 1821, Thomas Joseph Jenkins, a native of Sierra Leone in West Africa, reached Mauritius. He had graduated from the teacher training college set up by Joseph Lancaster known as Borough Road College, Southark of east London. According to Sherwood, M (2008) there were African teachers teaching in British schools in the nineteenth century.

A dramatic shoot out between French rider Guenet Barbara and Alice Mills of Great Britain has added extra spice to the climax of the Fegentri Lady Riders competition at the Sun Resorts International Jockeys' Weekend. Champ De Mars now traditionally stages the final of the worldwide competition with the top eight amateurs battling it out on the 202 year old course. This time only eight points separate the experienced Ms Barbara and the 27 year old British girl who led the competition at one stage this season after a triumph at the Curragh in Ireland.

Il n’avait pas été en mesure d’inquiéter le vainqueur Captain’s Bounty, mais avait conclu honorablement pour émerger du paquet.

You are reading this because of something Firoz Ghanty wrote in Forum last December when Madiba passed away: you could come away with the impression that Gandhi didn't give two hoots about the plight of blacks in general and black South Africans in particular. This kind of puzzled me and made me realize that my knowledge of the work of the Mahatma was way too sketchy. So I went to do a little bit of research. To get my schooling out of the way.

Thanks to Mahatma Gandhi, by 1921 the Indian National Congress (INC) was a revitalised national party which he chaired from 1924 to 1929. Its tricolour national flag became popular countrywide. There was consistency concerning slogans, policy and ideology. Hindi or Hindustani was gaining ground across India, while the INC followers adopted the khadi.

The Day of the African Child (DAC) was initiated by the Organisation of African Unity (now the African Union) in 1991. In that year, a resolution was passed in commemoration of the 1976 protests by children in Soweto, South Africa, and to honour the memory of those who lost their lives during the protests. Those public demonstrations were essentially against the education system of South African during Apartheid rule.

Modi has proved to be a successful manager of affairs. Gujarat bears it out. The Indians saw in him an icon of hope after repeated scandals and inaction during the outgoing government's tenure. The electorate voted against the Congress as much as they did for the Chai Wala, thus breaking caste taboo.
