My father died fourteen days ago. The end of an interesting and adventurous life - a journey with highs and lows like any human life but a life where God was a constant companion. Marc had many examples of divine providence guiding his life and often shared these with his children and friends to inspire and give hope.

Marc was a sociable man who could talk with anyone. Always willing to share a story, or help other people.

Before coming to the subject relating to the history of the Mauritius-Turkey connections, it is important to know that the Indian Ocean region had been one of the major concerns of the Ottoman rulers since the 16th century.  The Ottoman Empire was motivated by three reasons to mark its naval presence in the remote Indian Ocean despite the fact that there was no direct shipping route connecting the Mediterranean sea with the Indian Ocean – a physical handicap which perdurated until the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869.

The autobiography of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, entitled “Wings of Fire” allows the reader to measure the multi dimensions of the man before he served as the 11th President of India. The book, duly autographed by Dr Kalam was gifted to me in April 2003 by my daughter Kobashni when she studied in Chennai. The book contains lessons for  a good life for every human being on our planet.

The India-Pakistan dynamic, which is traditionally driven by ups-and-downs, has witnessed open hostility at its worst, yet incredible civility and courteousness at its best.  While high politics are involved in protracted dialogue to drive a process of sustainable and long-term peace, there are several initiatives at people-to-people level working to unite the hearts beyond the borders.

Barely six months ago, on 25 January 2015, the left-wing party Syriza in Greece swept to power on a wave of anti-austerity popular support. The Greeks had had enough of the austerity measures imposed upon them by the Troïka (the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund). These ludicrous “structural adjustment plans” plunged them further into recession and widespread poverty while their country was increasingly losing its sovereignty and fast becoming the private property of a small group of Euro-creditors and “banksters”.

The visit of Josian Sebastian from Mauritius, a father who accompanied his daughter of 10 years old to look for medical treatment in Australia, told me that many facilities for children suffering from certain diseases are not available in Mauritius, and that is the reason he is in Australia.

The great philosopher Socrates from Greece said that there are four great qualities required of a judge:
To hear courteously;
To answer wisely;
To consider soberly;
To decide impartially.

Having known Judge S. Bhaukaurally since he was a Magistrate sitting at the District Court of Mapou, I have no hesitation to write that he subscribed to all four axioms laid down four centuries ago.

This article, on the eve of the Maharashtra Day and Shivaji Day, aims at prompting some serious reflection on the context of the arrival of some of our ancestors from Bombay, especially those who came soon after the Indian Mutiny of 1857 (sometimes referred to as the first Indian war of independence). It also attempts to highlight the link between the political conditions in the Bombay Presidency and the increase in the number of immigrants during that period.

Vishnu Lutchmeenaraidoo as Finance Minister has always had some regard for the expatriates.
When he was Finance Minister in the 1980s, Vishnu Lutchmeenaraidoo introduced the External Account Scheme for expatriates offering them a higher rate of interest (of about 13%, I believe).

The difference between then and now, is that this time he is talking about the experience and expertise of Mauritians residing abroad rather than their money.  In both situations there is a bit to say.

The visit of a Prime Minister of India to Mauritius has always been given the greatest attention by both governments as it provides an excellent  opportunity to boost existing avenues of cooperation  in the light of geopolitical events and add new ones in the emerging sectors of our economies.

The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake his first overseas visits of 2015 to the Indian Ocean, the significance of which cannot be undermined, particularly by the states concerned. These are the Seychelles, Mauritius and Sri Lanka, in respective order. As a Mauritian living in India, I take this visit to heart. Having seen the response of Modi’s other missions abroad since his election in May 2014, I am keen to how he is received by my fellow countrymen and women.

There is a tendency in academia to be ambivalent about the role and importance of democracy as a catalyst for development as the Asian Tigers and particularly China have enjoyed high growth and especially development either using one of the various forms of flawed democracy or without having any democracy at all.

As a humanitarian, Governor Farquhar was concerned about the provision of some form of moral and religious education for the slave population of Port Louis. He realized that Reverend Lebrun had attracted mostly the gens de couleur - the free coloured population - to his school at St George Street. The two other small schools in the Plaine Verte area failed to entice the slave population. The low number of slaves in attendance must have influenced Farquhar in his request for another educator form the missionary societies in Britain in the 1820s. The Governor approached the British Foreign School Society (BFSS) which run non-sectarian schools using the Lancasterian system. We do not know whether he specifically requested for a person of African origin. In November 1821, Thomas Joseph Jenkins, a native of Sierra Leone in West Africa, reached Mauritius. He had graduated from the teacher training college set up by Joseph Lancaster known as Borough Road College, Southark of east London. According to Sherwood, M (2008) there were African teachers teaching in British schools in the nineteenth century.

When we look back at the past elections, the one main question that may come to our mind is ‘Who would have thought?’ This is not referred of course to the fact that the running party Lalliance Lepep was bound to win but rather referring to the fact that the previous prime minister did not even make it to parliament this time. Who would have thought?

A dramatic shoot out between French rider Guenet Barbara and Alice Mills of Great Britain has added extra spice to the climax of the Fegentri Lady Riders competition at the Sun Resorts International Jockeys' Weekend. Champ De Mars now traditionally stages the final of the worldwide competition with the top eight amateurs battling it out on the 202 year old course. This time only eight points separate the experienced Ms Barbara and the 27 year old British girl who led the competition at one stage this season after a triumph at the Curragh in Ireland.

The South African President holds office for a period of 5 years while his United States counterpart has a term limit of 4 years. In September 2000, the French voted for a constitutional amendment to shorten the length of the presidential term from 7 to 5 years.

You are reading this because of something Firoz Ghanty wrote in Forum last December when Madiba passed away: you could come away with the impression that Gandhi didn't give two hoots about the plight of blacks in general and black South Africans in particular. This kind of puzzled me and made me realize that my knowledge of the work of the Mahatma was way too sketchy. So I went to do a little bit of research. To get my schooling out of the way.

In the book ‘Pour une même bâtardise’ the great Pierre Renaud wrote an incisive piece of writing on Professor Dad Prithipaul. The writing is brief, but it is packed with humanity and brilliance, reflections on time, life, aesthetics, morality, religion, mysticism and sufism and at the same time visions of the Ulysses-like struggle of the lives of some intellectuals who eventually find solace outside Mauritius, because they are in fact never really ‘wanted’ or taken with the seriousness or respect they deserve.

To make our fellowship sustainable, at the University of Delaware, we were asked to think of an “Essential Question” to have our vision in a good parameter. My “Essential Question” was/is “How can my Organization help to engage the drug addicts into community services; to be able to raise their standard of living and the ones they are helping.”

May 1814, Reverend Jean Lebrun arrived in Mauritius at the age of twenty-five after completing his three-year training as a missionary at the London Missionary Society (LMS) Training Academy of Gosport, in the South of England. He had courses in theology and pedagogy, as the main motto of all missionary societies was “Preach and Teach “. He was lectured by Dr Bogue, an Edinburgh trained linguist, in Malagasy and was able to perfect his French. All missionary societies preferred the use of the mother tongue for evangelization work. Initially it seems that the LMS wanted Lebrun to practice in Madagascar.
