Among the four candidates for the Labour leadership it may be said that perhaps, in terms of personality, Andy Burnham’s good looks and Yvette Cooper’s exuberance may carry some weight but, together with the nonplus Liz Kendall, they did not seem convincing during the television debate in June last. They did not exude the same sincerity and confidence that naturally came out of Jeremy Corbyn who looked more mature and sincere in his delivery, a trait that is causing concern to some party members and more so to the political foes.

The sin committed by Sanjeev is that he happens to be the former husband of Ms Nandanee Soornack with whom the Labour Party leader, Dr Navin Ramgoolam, had developed a very close friendship.

They are impressing upon the people of that northern part of the United Kingdom that they are better off staying as British subjects rather than opting for Scottish citizenship.

Since his appointment as Prime Minister of the world’s largest democracy, Hindu nationalist Narendra Modi is constantly endorsing Hinduness through his local and international gestures. Today the call on Modi to focus on Hind Swaraj, rather than Hindu Rashtra, is urgent.

I have lived in Australia for the past 11 years. It's got it's good and it's bad, like all countries but one of the things I admire here is the strong sense that everyone should be given a fair go.  When I arrived here the Liberals were in government at the federal level. Their leader, John Howard (1), had won the election in 1996, 1998, 2001 and 2004 until his loss in 2007 to the Labor Party led by Kevin Rudd (2). In 2002, Simon Crean (3) was the leader of the Labor Party. Crean was unable to close the opinion poll lead thatJohn Howard held over him. He lost his party's support and was replaced by Mark Latham (4). Latham lost the election against Howard in 2004. The Labor party replaced him by Kim Beazley in January 2005. Beazley was ineffective against the ever strong Howard the Labor Party replaced Beazley by Kevin Rudd in December 2006.

This article may be considered an addenda or a continuity to our article 'Mauritius independence 1961-1968' published on 9th March 2014. 46 years after, we can remember with a paradoxical mixed-feeling of apprehension, discomfort and delectation at what our colonial masters and colonial political legatees left us. There were mistakes made by both the colonizers and the colonized, the actors and thinkers of the time. Today with the wisdom of hindsight we can look back.

Mauritius will celebrate its 46th independance anniversary on 12th March tis year. This article starts with the 3rd Mauritius Constitutional Conference of 26th June to 7th July 1961 known as “The Mauritius Review Conference” and terminates with the grant of Independence on 12 March 1968. It is as usual based on declassified papers at the British National Archive (BNA) with a rational analysis of both events and evidence. History has an uncanny way of unfolding and this is apparent with the added benefit of hindsight. We will chapter the road to Independence by looking at the action of different protagonists. We will carefully look at role of, on one side, our colonial masters, British politicians in office and top Whitehall civil servants advising and assisting them and, on the other side, that of our colonial political leaders led by Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) for independence and by Jules Koënig and Gaëtan Duval for integration with the United Kingdom.

Induction into Politics in Johannesburg
Born on 18 July 1918 in the small village of Mvezo, in Transkei, Rolihlahla Nelson Mandela was orphaned after nine years, as his father then died in abject poverty. In 1941, whilst in Johannesburg, Mandela came across Walter Sisulu who impressed him. Recommended by Sisulu, he was recruited as a clerk/messenger in one of the city’s largest legal firms. Mandela shared an office with Gaur Radebe, the only other African employee, who was an active member of the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP), often attending political meetings where he even spoke. Mandela sometimes accompanied him. Attracted to the ANC, in August 1943 he participated, together with some 10,000 marchers led by Redebe, to boycott the bus in Alexandra, where he had been staying, in protest against the increase of the fare.

The 1967 general election remains the most important one in the history of Mauritius. The result of this poll was the decisive factor for the colony to accede to independence, to be granted independence by the colonial power, Great Britain. It was the first election after the merging of the constituencies reducing their number from 40 to 20 while increasing the number of elected representatives from 40 to 60, each constituency with 3 representatives, as recommended in the Banwell Report of 1966. Rodrigues stayed as one constituency with 2 elected representatives.

'The Road to Independence' is the title of Moonindra Nath Varma's book (1976) devoted to the significant social, political and constitutional developments since the mid-1930's up to the advent of independence. This book, which has become a classic on the issue of the independence of Mauritius, reveals that the first formal demand for independence was submitted at the Third London Constitutional Conference in June-July 1961 by the Mauritius Labour Party - as a matter of fact, the request was for 'complete independence in 1964'.

My then Latino boyfriend, who'd grown up in Valencia, two hours outside of the Venezuelan capital, experienced the days of the attempted coup led by the Bolivarian leader in 1992. “He was like Che,” Nicolás told me, recalling the excitement in Venezuela for a people who had lived in a country marred by successions of dictatorial regimes throughout most of the 20th century.

There is definitely a feeling of serious anxiety amongst the Hadj pilgrims 2012 these days. Minister Kasenally announced a few days ago that only 1,300 visas have been granted to Mauritians who intend to go on pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, this year. We are aware that 2,000 pilgrims have expressed the wish, this year, to proceed to Mecca; so what will happen to the remaining 700 pilgrims?
