Our Island might be a small dot on the world map but it has many a great reason to amaze the world. For instance, Mauritius is one of the rare nations capable of tracing back the name, history and burial place of its first official registered birth on its soil ! Can the French, the British or the Chinese show us the grave of the very first man born on theirs ?

The Chagos case was longer in headlines since quite a while. Things suddenly changed when this celebrity joined this ‘cause’. Which triggers me to ask, is celebrity public relations still cogent in contemporary society? News items prove it ‘yes’!

Every January the Government of India organises the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas/PBD (Overseas Indians’ Day) to celebrate the homecoming of global Indians. The first session was held in New Delhi on 9 January 2003, with over 2,000 delegates from 61 countries. It marked the anniversary of the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Mahatma Gandhi’s return-to-India. He was the first NRI, having spent 21 years (between 1993 and 1914) in South Africa where he had championed the Indians’ cause. Mauritian Prime Minister, Sir Anerood Jugnauth, who now again leads the government, as well as Nobel laureate writers, Sir V. S. Naipaul and Prof. Amartya Sen, were among the eminent guests in 2003. To mark the Centenary of Gandhi’s return from South Africa, a special PBD has been celebrated at Gandhinagar, Gujarat, in 2015 (7-9 January).

What a long journey Pete Seeger’s life has been! Not tedious or jaded at all, but full of excitement and wondrously spent as a determined optimist unceasingly championing folk music and social change. This folklorist companion of Woody Guthrie was a singer, songwriter/song collector, 5-string banjo and 12-string guitar player who was inducted by his parents but opted early for a roving lifestyle steeped in rural traditions. He typically enjoyed singing along at rallies and concerts and was infectious at that, displaying a deep sense of community living and commitment to social and environmental issues despite his venerable age. He became the mentor of younger topical folk singers and musicians: the Kingston Trio, Trini Lopez, Peter, Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, the Byrds, Don McLean, Bruce Springsteen…

History records the achievements of individuals and put on them on the road to posterity. But there are individuals who have transformed societies by their actions, yet they remain unknown. A great Mauritian passed away on 6 January 2014. Her name was Madeleine Rose Leung Shing. Who was she?

AS POINTED OUT IN THE LAST THREE VIEWPOINTS, MAHATMA GANDHI DOES NOT BELONG TO INDIA ONLY. HISTORY TELLS US that he indeed forms part of the select or restricted social group of world revolutionaries: who are all born, bred and groomed by prevailing local harsh circumstances to liberate their people – and that by breaking many shackles of repression.

Induction into Politics in Johannesburg
Born on 18 July 1918 in the small village of Mvezo, in Transkei, Rolihlahla Nelson Mandela was orphaned after nine years, as his father then died in abject poverty. In 1941, whilst in Johannesburg, Mandela came across Walter Sisulu who impressed him. Recommended by Sisulu, he was recruited as a clerk/messenger in one of the city’s largest legal firms. Mandela shared an office with Gaur Radebe, the only other African employee, who was an active member of the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP), often attending political meetings where he even spoke. Mandela sometimes accompanied him. Attracted to the ANC, in August 1943 he participated, together with some 10,000 marchers led by Redebe, to boycott the bus in Alexandra, where he had been staying, in protest against the increase of the fare.

When my dad and I entered the dark room and got nearly tumbled over by the sloping stairs, we saw the habitual villain standing close to the villagers nearby an apple tree and grabbling one apple from them with a sharp knife that sliced the ripe fruit. His threatening and arrogant look thrust a certain degree of fear on the villagers who carefully bowed to what the villain said. He was eyeing for the village belle and looked mischievously at her. The actress said “Hmmm” and moved away.

The centennial Indian cinema is popular not only throughout the peninsula and in the neighbouring countries but also across the world. People of all races, religions and cultures like watching Indian films that, thanks to translations and subtitles in various languages, can be appreciated. Indian cinema helps evoke India's uniquely inclusive culture, which the author, a researcher, promotes through his Organisation for Diaspora Initiatives wedded to intra-culturalism in the special plural Mauritian society.

The virus of white collar crime has spread far and wide across the world and is eating the fabric of world economy. Hardly a day goes by without a scandal being splashed as headline on our papers. There is need to be concerned when we find that some politicians have overnight become multi millionaires from scratch.

The virus of white collar crime has spread far and wide across the world and is eating the fabric of world economy. Hardly a day goes by without a scandal being splashed as headline on our papers. There is need to be concerned when we find that some politicians have overnight become multi millionaires from scratch. Cynics say that politics is a booming business. How far is it true we donot know. One thing for sure politics is an alchemy.
