Our Island might be a small dot on the world map but it has many a great reason to amaze the world. For instance, Mauritius is one of the rare nations capable of tracing back the name, history and burial place of its first official registered birth on its soil ! Can the French, the British or the Chinese show us the grave of the very first man born on theirs ?

In 1985, the West Indian Ocean was one of the cleanest oceanic regions on the planet. 30 years later, despite rapid population growth and urbanization up and down its African shoreline, it still is.

This is in no small part due to the foresight of East Africa's coastal countries, Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Madagascar. When they convened to sign the Nairobi Convention three decades ago, they recognized that their future prosperity relied on the sustainable, intelligent development of the great swath of blue lapping at their shores.

I am not an afro pessimist nor do I associate myself with the vilifying pictures often depicted of Africa by the western media but the fact remains that more than 50 years after the birth of the OAU, the precursor to the AU, the resource rich continent remains divided, unequal, diseased, poor and ridden with conflicts.

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) chose the 12th March 1968 as the day on which the independence of Mauritius would be proclaimed because the date coincides with the anniversary of the beginning of the Salt March by Mahatma Gandhi on 12th March 1930. The March is an important milestone in the struggle waged by Gandhi for Indian independence. However, despite its association with the most important day in the calendar of the Mauritian nation, most people in this country do not know anything about the Salt March, and are unable to see how it is of special significance to Mauritius. Consequently, as a contribution to the process of nation building, the political heirs of SSR must explain why the achievement of our independence was designed to be a homage to the Salt March and Mahatma Gandhi.

The Southern African region is becoming attractive to world business community and Mauritius not only wants to expand its commercial activities on the African continent but also position itself as a gateway to this promising region. Now is a historic opportunity for Mauritius to take an active role through its economic diplomacy in the region and kick-start a more intensive political approach to investment and trade in Africa. Many of our businesspeople have begun to see the value of this strategic economic diplomacy but it is yet to be translated down to the operational level. Mauritius is, perhaps, in a unique position today to access its diplomatic leverage to these big African markets and extend its business expertise to the Southern African countries and other neighboring countries. With our dynamic private sector coupled with a progressive government I am very optimist that Mauritius will substantially enhance its economic standing in the region and beyond in the coming years.

Every January the Government of India organises the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas/PBD (Overseas Indians’ Day) to celebrate the homecoming of global Indians. The first session was held in New Delhi on 9 January 2003, with over 2,000 delegates from 61 countries. It marked the anniversary of the Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Mahatma Gandhi’s return-to-India. He was the first NRI, having spent 21 years (between 1993 and 1914) in South Africa where he had championed the Indians’ cause. Mauritian Prime Minister, Sir Anerood Jugnauth, who now again leads the government, as well as Nobel laureate writers, Sir V. S. Naipaul and Prof. Amartya Sen, were among the eminent guests in 2003. To mark the Centenary of Gandhi’s return from South Africa, a special PBD has been celebrated at Gandhinagar, Gujarat, in 2015 (7-9 January).

This is the first time in the history of Mauritius that two women have been asked to hold high-level offi ces. Professor Ameenah Gurib-Fakim as President of the Republic of Mauritius under the Lepep Alliance and Francoise Labelle as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly under the PTr-MMM Alliance. Gender Activists are proud of this move although we know very well that this is being done to silence us since there are only 12 woman candidates on the list of 60 for the PTr-MMM Alliance and a meagre fi gure of 9 on 60 for Lepep Alliance. The number of women candidates for these two major alliances is indeed an insult to women. But was there a need to put salt on the wound by insulting Professor Gurib-Fakim publicly and saying that “Dan liniversite pann trouv li bon, aster li pou bon pou vinn prezidan repiblik?” (she was not found good at the University, now she will be good as President of the Republic?). We should rewind a bit so that the Mauritian population will remember that the same Prime Minister, Dr. Navin Ramgoolam found Professor Gurib-Fakim so competent as a researcher and a scientifi c that he recommended her to the former President of the Republic to be elevated to the rank of Commander of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (CSK) in 2008.

Wherever Indians go, they carry Indianness with them. The Indian Diaspora, spread across the world, has made India global. India and its worldwide diaspora witnessed different historical, geographical and socio-political settings.

One of the key proposals in the Labour/MMM Alliance Agreement is a seven-year term executive President for Mauritius, contrary to what the country has presently i.e. a ceremonial President with a 5 year term. Republics have either a ceremonial President where the ultimate authority rests with a Prime Minister or an executive President in which case the President has ultimate authority over the Prime Minister.

You are reading this because of something Firoz Ghanty wrote in Forum last December when Madiba passed away: you could come away with the impression that Gandhi didn't give two hoots about the plight of blacks in general and black South Africans in particular. This kind of puzzled me and made me realize that my knowledge of the work of the Mahatma was way too sketchy. So I went to do a little bit of research. To get my schooling out of the way.

Thanks to Mahatma Gandhi, by 1921 the Indian National Congress (INC) was a revitalised national party which he chaired from 1924 to 1929. Its tricolour national flag became popular countrywide. There was consistency concerning slogans, policy and ideology. Hindi or Hindustani was gaining ground across India, while the INC followers adopted the khadi.

Contrary to expectations that the African National Congress (ANC) would gain nearly all the seats at the first democratic elections held in South Africa on 27 April 1994, the party won only 63% of the seats, short of the two thirds majority (67%) required for allowing the party to unilaterally amend the constitution.

Mauritius, along with 14 other developing nations, according to a World Bank study on 215 countries carried out by research analyst Ehiwario Efeyini of the US Trust Bank of America Wealth Management, has the potential to graduate to the elite club of high-income economies. Indeed Mauritius, on the basis of its present model of development and policies, can easily increase its wealth in the years ahead but it is also likely that it may not make the transition and get trapped into the so-called “middle income trap” as pointed out by Efeyini. South Africa and Brazil, for example, have been languishing for decades within the middle-income range. Countries trapped at middle-income level usually have declining investment ratios, slow manufacturing growth, limited industrial and export diversification, and poor labour market conditions. Our research analyst did suggest that though the 14 countries have the potential to make it to the high-income status, they must however create the conditions for a more competitive, entrepreneurial and productive economy.

The Day of the African Child (DAC) was initiated by the Organisation of African Unity (now the African Union) in 1991. In that year, a resolution was passed in commemoration of the 1976 protests by children in Soweto, South Africa, and to honour the memory of those who lost their lives during the protests. Those public demonstrations were essentially against the education system of South African during Apartheid rule.

In the wake of the recognition of academic programmes offered by various tertiary institutions in Mauritius, a lot has been said on the subject of accreditation. Those who are conversant with the subject matter will agree with me that only half of the truth has been exposed. The main issue has in fact never been put forward, I suppose not to create further embarrassments to our institutions. The intention of this article is to shed light on the main issue with the hope that the public will be enlightened and the authorities will do something about it. Coming from and engineering background I will use engineering programmes as an example for illustration, but I suppose same will apply to all academic programmes leading to professional qualifications viz LLBs, MBBS, etc...

2013 clearly marked the crescendo in LGBTQI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex) rights in various countries - Austria, Brazil, France, a handful of States in the U.S., England and Wales, Germany, New-Zealand and Uruguay. Late Nelson Mandela, father of the “Rainbow Nation” enshrined protection and promotion of LGBTQI rights in the South African Constitution. In India, Rahul Gandhi, Aamir Khan, other prominent figures and civil rights movements vouched for promotion of LGBTQI rights and promotion of consensual anal sex.
