1. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” – quotation of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, fondly referred to as Madiba. I have recently come across an article concerning India about maintenance by one spouse or the other entitled “interesting trends in divorce matters”. In this article, the gist of the reasoning is as follows:
“In recent Indian divorce cases, courts, deviating from the norm, have been denying maintenance to the wife if she is capable of earning or was     earning in the past. There are also cases of the wife being asked to pay maintenance to the husband.”

An image which often comes to mind, with regard to television programmes or films about criminal trials, is that of a witness being caught telling lies under cross examination by a wily old barrister. Another cliché is that of a vital piece of evidence which surprisingly crops up at the very last minute to clinch the final victory. The reality may well be different but the stereotypes and misconceptions linger on.

Corruption is an insidious plague that has a wide range of corrosive effects on societies.[1]  The insidious nature of corruption propels the enactment of novel, progressive or even draconian anti-corruption laws to nudge people out of their comfort zone and subject them to a sunshine test.

9 October 2012 – a 16-year old girl was shot by the Talibans whilst travelling on the bus with her school friends in Pakistan’s Swat Valley… shot for daring to attend  school and campaign for the rights of girls to education.  She could have slipped into fear; Malala Yousafzai did not.  She stood again, with even more confidence, to fight for the right to education, to girls and boys alike.

AS IT IS, THANKS TO OUR AFRICAN, INDIAN, CHINESE AND EUROPEAN ANCESTORS….OUR TINY COUNTRY IS BLESSED WITH THE GREATEAST RELIGIONS AND TRADITIONS OF THE WORLD. Along with Christmas and Eid Ul-Fitr, the forthcoming Divali – on next 3rd Nov. – is widely considered and celebrated as one of the most popular festivals in this part of the planet. With time, this festival of lights has verily turned more social than religious.

“What are the risks?” asked Haneemah.
Her voice was quivering.
“You risk going inside for several months.  You know very well that shoplifting is a serious crime.  Believe me, they won't leave you.  And then there's the loss of your reputation because when the police proceed with the matter, it becomes public,” answered the young man.

He wasn't more than 25.  Well-built, his hair was appropriately cropped and when he said he was a policeman since some years now, no one, let alone Haneemah, would doubt it.

We are living in dangerous times. Indeed, everyday newspapers and radios report horrendous crimes, be it murders, rapes, thefts, assaults, etc. Law and Order is clearly struggling. Our mores have changed, but our institutions lack an iron fist and willpower to act preventively. Rather, they tend to react, and sometimes overreact.

Lord Denning had his opinion of whether it's the Court duty to restrain the publication of an article and after more than forty years, even though we have had considerable changes in Human Rights Legislation relating to private life, we still make reference to the opinion of the most celebrated English judge of the 20th century.
