The media world is abuzz with the shocking news which is currently making the headlines everywhere, for the wrong reasons; the brutal killing of Cecil, a 13-year old lion, which also happened to be the most famous one in Zimbabwe.  A resident of the Hwange National Park which is Zimbabwe's largest game reserve, Cecil had achieved an iconic status as a major tourist attraction and was known to be friendly to visitors. His size and singular black mane made him recognisable and to top it all, he was monitored as part of an Oxford University study into lion conservation, according to BBC News sources.

When President  Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 critics asked on what basis the decision was made. Obama had just started serving as the first black President of the United States and pledged to create a new climate in international relations. The Nobel Prize Committee put a high premium on Obama, praising him for “his promotion of nuclear of non proliferation and his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people.” Can one say he was rewarded in anticipation? Let us  look at Obama’s recent mega diplomatic successes in Cuba and Iran.

“Ms. Huffington,” he asked, “can Hillary Clinton be stopped?”
Ms. Huffington answered:
“Why does she have to be stopped? How come whenever a woman wants power, we treat her like Godzilla? She wants to be President, not destroy Tokyo.”

Japan already has problems with authorized gambling that includes pachinko as well as horse, boat and bicycle racing.

The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake his first overseas visits of 2015 to the Indian Ocean, the significance of which cannot be undermined, particularly by the states concerned. These are the Seychelles, Mauritius and Sri Lanka, in respective order. As a Mauritian living in India, I take this visit to heart. Having seen the response of Modi’s other missions abroad since his election in May 2014, I am keen to how he is received by my fellow countrymen and women.

The demise of this untiring senior academic, who was affiliated to the Department of Educational Foundations and Policy Studies of the London Institute of Education before his ‘retirement’ in 2003, is deeply mourned by both the English-speaking and international community of educationists, policy makers and students. His sharp and sound scholarship, firm leadership, inspiring mentorship and lifelong dedication to the global development of the history of education are acknowledged in Europe, the United States, Brazil, China, Japan, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. This is borne out by the obituaries written by his younger colleagues Roy Lowe and Ruth Watts (School of Education, University of Birmingham), Gary McCulloch (International Centre for Historical Research in Education, University College London) and J-J.H. Dekker (Department of Pedagogy, Rijksuniversiteit, Groningen). (1)

The Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) celebrates its golden jubilee (1965-2015) on this 8th February. To celebrate such a great happening, so far overlooked by the station itself, this article salutes a television serial or soap that stole the show back some thirty-seven years ago and which, to some extent, marks this historical milestone of local television.

I am currently in Mauritius, and with the news from Washington about the easing of Cold War tensions between the United States and Cuba, I can't help but think of the differences that political systems and international politics can make on the future and functioning of island states. It's interesting to consider how two similar-sized countries, both having sugar as the basis of their economies for generations and experiencing similar challenges as islands, can turn out to be such different places.

“…these 50 years have shown that isolation has not worked.  It’s time for a new approach” U.S. President Barack Obama said on Wednesday, December 17, speaking of the standoff between the United States and Cuba. “In the most significant changes in our policy in more than fifty years, we will end an outdated approach that, for decades, has failed to advance our interests, and instead we will begin to normalize relations between our two countries.”

One of the key proposals in the Labour/MMM Alliance Agreement is a seven-year term executive President for Mauritius, contrary to what the country has presently i.e. a ceremonial President with a 5 year term. Republics have either a ceremonial President where the ultimate authority rests with a Prime Minister or an executive President in which case the President has ultimate authority over the Prime Minister.

Mauritius should be proud of its relationship with China and not take it for granted. It is not a relationship of former colonial master and servant. It is rather a relationship  based on real friendship that has  got something very spicy, sweet and sour at times, and most of all very special which many African countries  do not and cannot have , although they were as many as 20  to  have established     diplomatic relations  with China long before Mauritius.

Green activist and consumer campaigner Ralph Nader is something of an icon in the United States. Nader is founding a citizen’s movement to restrain the power of multinationals to accrue money only to themselves. He wants you to be a part of it. “Arguably the most dangerous corporation in the world is Monsanto. Its entire goal is to codify the genetics of humans, flora fauna ... and to change the nature of nature. It's doing it without any legal or ethical framework. Google  are a true menace in terms of privacy.  They're so aggressively pursuing more sales and market share that by definition they don't know boundaries.”
