Further to the brilliant paper by Jean Marc Poché titled "L'éducation sésame du développement " that raises some very pertinent issues, I will like to add that we are being given an excellent opportunity for an overhaul of the whole education and training system. We should also be thinking about "formation" – capacity building that prepares our teachers and kids for the future – as voiced out by some eminent  educationists.

I have never thought of visiting Thailand… even if I have been an absolute fan of the movie ‘The Beach’, where our now famous Leo went island hopping in search of something his character had not ‘tried before’, it never dawned on me to visit the place. Perhaps because I am from an island… so why try other beaches when I know they will never come close to the ones I grew up on? In any case, a happy concurrence took me to Siam, or Thailand, as it is now known.

Decades of intellectual atheism peaked with Richard Dawkins' 2006 book 'The God Delusion'. The pro-evolutionary biologist argued that the creationist idea of a universal deity behind the design of the Universe is undermining the education of 'proven scientific facts' such as the evolution of species. His point was that Creationism is a metaphysical philosophy which has passed its purpose of helping us understand our place in the Universe. Dawkins, considered 'the most famous atheist alive', recently mentioned that while evolutionary Biology has 'superseded' Creationism, the Multiverse theory of physicist Stephen Hawking is now delivering the coup de grâce. Propounding how an almost infinite number of universes coexisted simultaneously, Stephen Hawking wrote in his 2010 book 'The Grand Design' that our Universe is one in billions, having the suitable physical laws and conditions for life, thereby 'logically' resulting in its emergence: a matter of cosmological randomness on an unimaginable scale of repetition. Stephen Hawking has become the Charles Darwin of Physics and Cosmology.

Dear Authorities,

Mauritius is an Island of intrigue. The clear turquoise Indian Ocean hugs the palm-strewn white beaches. Friendly warm smiles invite thousands of tourists from around the world to explore the coastal towns and inland villages between the sea and the many emerald green Sugar Cane fields. To appreciate and savor the flavors of Island dishes, refresh and restore mind and body before heading back to our own residential homes abroad.

At the entrance, a group of young people displaced a very original banner with the following words…. “SPEED IT UP”, I was simply wondering whether they were referring to the actual process on the climate negotiations or an address to the leaders of the world to speed up the de-carbonization process for controlling the global emissions and move out of dirty coal.

In 1985, the West Indian Ocean was one of the cleanest oceanic regions on the planet. 30 years later, despite rapid population growth and urbanization up and down its African shoreline, it still is.

This is in no small part due to the foresight of East Africa's coastal countries, Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Madagascar. When they convened to sign the Nairobi Convention three decades ago, they recognized that their future prosperity relied on the sustainable, intelligent development of the great swath of blue lapping at their shores.

My dear Raj,
I am writing to you first as the Commandant who accompanied my students on their expedition to collect the used plastic bags left behind by hikers on the Piton de la Rivière Noire trail and then as the new Minister of Environment empowered to achieve extraordinary results.
I would like you to be more ambitious than what you proposed last week.

The identity of a place and its relationship to the community matters since it is an intrinsic part of a community’s sense of belonging. Hence, when industry leaders bring about change in an environment, they should be considering the community’s needs in the equation. But do they really?

This is an individualistic precept that globalization is creating an undesirable uniformity in cities around the world. Architects are heralding it as the era of ‘modernization’. However, an interesting conundrum emerges from that concept.

Nowadays, more and more women in Mauritius are participating in the more professional world as they are more educated. Furthermore, people are finding it very challenging to make both ends meet and hence their contribution to the family budget has
become more of a necessity. A common pattern is
witnessed when a majority of women, doing well
academically, enter the professional world; they get married, have to take care not only of their parents but also of their in-laws, have children and then starts the “merry go round” with its never ending list of additional responsibilities.

A Modi Wave swept BJP to power over the 1.3 billion Indians in 2014.
A similar Jugnauth Wave swept MSM&co to power over the 1.3 million Mauritians later that year. Admittedly a huge difference in scale but at the United Nations for example it’s still the democracy of one country – big or small – one vote. For example India is planning 100 smart cities by 2020, we are doing 8.

By the definition that we give to politics in Mauritius, I speak from a non-political position, away from the pettiness of partisan politics. By the Greek meaning of politics, then my every word is deeply political as it is seeped with a concern that the management of the city has to be geared towards the well being of ALL its inhabitants. Smart Mauritius is at the moment a concept that is generating fiery debate, and it should because it raises matters of ownership (land, public money, infrastructure, economic and political power, our future).

The struggle to secure land rights for individuals and communities has become a matter of survival. Access to land is one of the key determinants of hunger, and it is even more unequally distributed than income.

Access to land is one of the key determinants of hunger, and it is even more unequally distributed than income. Protecting soils need not undermine prosperity. On the contrary, sustainable soil-protection practices can actually boost agricultural yields. Crop diversification, recycling, and soil cover can all contribute to living, fertile, and active soil capable of optimal water management. Approaches like agro-ecological production are not being promoted to any serious extent.

Mauritius at the Crossroad
INTRODUCTION
Madam Speaker, at the outset I wish to place on record that I have had very fruitful meetings with various stakeholders during the recent Budget consultation exercise. I extend my thanks to all those who have participated, for their views and suggestions. Indeed, their contribution has been most helpful in today’s Budget presentation.

Why is energy pathway important?

Strategically the energy issue is so vital to any economy that it should compel every government to never lose control over it. The private sector, through the IPPs, control around 60% of the energy production (using mainly coal).

Why is energy pathway important?

The system is broken, income inequality is too great and the lack of restraint on the part of the energy companies is disastrous.

The system is broken, income inequality is too great and the lack of restraint on the part of the energy companies is disastrous. We have time to change our economic system so that it does not become more brutal and merciless as it deals with climate change. There is a fundamental difference between what the scientists are telling us we need to do and our current political reality. We can't change the physical reality, so we must change the political reality. There are kinds of growth that are clearly not good.

One of the priority tasks of a new government in a democratic system is to present its programme of work to Parliament and the nation. This is in line with the Westminster pattern of  government  and other democratic systems. When we were a colony the government programme was called ‘The Speech from the Throne’ and was read in the Throne Room at the Government House Port Louis by the Governor. Since we became a Republic in 1992, the President  of the Republic  has the duty to read the speech, setting out the government programme at the Sir Harilall Vaghjee Hall,Port Louis. The military parade and other ceremonial  aspects of the function have remained the same, except that the Speaker and the Clerk, National Assembly  no longer wear wigs!

Dear Mr Ivan Collendavelloo
Congratulations on your election victory, although it’s a pity that the betrayal of your Caesar was not more “Brute”. We are somewhat bemused by your new appointment given that you have just sworn to give your best advice to the President but say you need “technicians” to advise you. What happened to meritocracy? Perhaps this is an inevitable consequence of a National Assembly over-laden with lawyers. Will you ensure justice for future generations? We hope so.

China Dream is a concept engineered by Xi Jinping (the 5th generation of leaders) on 29th November 2012 and it consists of national rejuvenation, improvement in the lifestyle, prosperity and construction of a better society. Each person’s future and destiny is closely linked with the future and destiny of the country and the nation. He stated that the young people should “dare to dream, work assiduously to fulfill the dreams and contribute to the revitalization of the nation”. China Dream is about Chinese prosperity, collective effort, socialism and national glory.

Fellow Mauritians, brothers and sisters around the globe,

It is a known fact that fighting dishonesty, fraud and trying to promote equity is not appreciated by the ones benefitting from corruption practices. But it is also a fact that the question "what is to be done?" remains banging in the mind of every human longing for a better world. Each and every soul that suffers the cruelty, greed and machiavellism of this corrupted system have minds hungering for new answers to this age old question ... WE are all tired of the false promises of politicians and bureaucracy. This disappointment resonates all around the world and the only response politicians and elites have to offer to this global situation is to apply more and more force against global citizens who long for a free world ... Injustice is being openly and widely practiced by those who claim and cling to the power which was never theirs, ruling over lands as if they were half gods. It is like a veil being spread open to cover the whole planet and stealing our human dignity. Most of the time people fighting this injustice are people with no money, no generous donors, they have no business plan but what they have is the notion of right and wrong, freedom and oppression, intelligence and hearts that beat for truth and justice. It is a choice, to be free and not to be brutally smashed by a totalitarian world order. But all the qualities such people bear will be useless until we organise our parents, our communities, women and youth, professionals and workers in the factories and shops. We all have to understand that it affects even our "bread and butter" issues.

Madiba, a symbol in the struggle for human dignity and freedom once reminded us that, “Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity; it is an act of justice; like slavery and Apartheid, poverty is not natural; it is man-made, and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings.”

Generations are being entangled in a web of silence while facing a storm; the intersection between the economic, energy, fuel, food and climate crises. Humans striving for human survival are facing humans driven by human greed. I see the rising tide of corruption and the nexus of political and economic elites throttling aspirations and robbing the next generation of hope. Yes, we have to change the world. Changing the world has never been such a responsibility, it has become the one true thing that deserves to be called a "justified obligation".

We will have to be courageous and fearless in order to correct the mistakes made by generations before us before it's too late and the time is now! It is a duty written in our blood that our flesh and bones need to embrace a more caring and just world, and we need to fight for it. This generation is one of the most interconnected in the history of mankind. Any citizen can be a whistleblower, an unstoppable tsunami! Let us bring the limelight of transparency to all the dark corners where the crooked have locked our freedom and truth. Let us sweep aside the veil of corruption and dark secrecy that prevents us from breathing the fresh air we deserve. Each generation has it's own struggle and our's is calling. Past generations of freedom fighters and protectors of mankind have struggled for voice and now is the time to honour them, "MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD"! Let’s be responsible, let’s make it possible !!! We are ...

It’s now been one week we’re on the ground in Apia and have been heavily involved in the conference on numerous levels whether in the Steering or drafting committee or delivering speeches addressing the community. This is a tipping point for our organisation as we share our campaigns with others and is being approached to create symbiotic partnerships with other Civil Society Organisations, and possible partnerships with United Nation (UN) agencies, and others in the Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
