- Shiraaz Kureembokus, 27 ans, inscrit pour un PhD dans cette célèbre université, condamné à 18 mois de prison
Un ancien étudiant de l’Université de Maurice, aujourd’hui inscrit pour des cours en “post graduate” pour un PhD à l’Université d’Oxford, a été condamné pour pédophilie. Dans son jugement prononcé par le tribunal de cette ville britannique, la justice se montrant intraitable, Shiraaz Kureembokus, âgé de 27 ans, figure très connue dans certains cercles à Port-Louis, purgera une peine de 18 mois et fait désormais partie du registre international de pédophiles. Il avait été arrêté par la police en mai dernier dans le cadre d’une Sting Operation, le coupable croyant avoir affaire à un adolescent de 14 ans.
En fait, l’interlocuteur du pédophile mauricien n’était autre qu’un officier de police. Le Prosecutor, Christopher Hewertson, a demandé à la Cour de se montrer intraitable à l’encontre de ce pédophile au-dessus de tout soupçon.
« When the boy on Grindr told Kureembokus his age, the Oxford student, who had previously studied in Mauritius and was about to embark on his doctoral research, responded: It’s cool, baby, I’m 27 », s’était-il appesanti selon la presse britannique, qui fait état de cette condamnation.
Après cette première conversation, le dénommé Shiraaz Kureembokus devait reprendre les échanges sur WhatsApp en vue d’inviter sa victime pour une rencontre dans son appartement à Oxford. Le rendez-vous avait été fixé au 5 mai avec le prosécuteur soutenant que « the defendant was nearly double the age of the child who he arranged to have penetrative sex with ». L’étudiant mauricien en PhD avait été interpellé alors qu’il sortait de son appartement à la recherche de sa proie.
Me Brid Eve, avocate dont les services avaient été retenus par le pédophile, avait tenté de réclamer la clémence de la Cour en attribuant « his actions on loneliness » because of the coronavirus pandemic. Elle devait faire ressortir que « he was finding lockdown particularly hard. He was very lonely and had no friends at the college. On that day he made a grave error, he acted in self-gratification and loneliness from what he knew was right and legal. He calls it a moment of madness ».
Mais la juge Maria Lamb, en prononçant la sentence, a été intraitable en rappelant que « it is quite apparent from that that you were working on the basis that the person you were communicating with was a 14-year-old boy. There was frequent reference to the age of the boy and the fact he was at school. It is clear what you had in mind, anal and oral sex activity with him. You are a young man who had a very promising career ».
Cette condamnation a provoqué une onde de choc sur le campus de l’université d’Oxford. Commentant cette condamnation, un porte-parole de l’université devait faire comprendre au quotidien Metro que « we are shocked by the actions of Shiraaz Kureembokus which resulted in his conviction and sentencing. Shiraaz Kureembokus was a registered doctoral student and had not yet begun his research work. The Department of Education is deeply committed to the well-being and safeguarding of children and all necessary checks are undertaken before any of our students work in schools or with children in other settings ».
