L’Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA), dans un jugement rendu le 3 avril, a suspendu la licence radio de Top FM Ltd pour deux jours.
« It’s sheer madness to suspend the license of Top FM », a écrit le leader de l’opposition, Arvin Boolell, dans un message adressé à la presse. Il considère cela comme un « gross violation of the freedom of information ».
Le jugement de l’IBA, signée par l’Acting Director K. Ramphul, survient suite à un contentieux entre l’autorité régulatrice et Top FM concernant le compte-rendu d’une Private Notice Question (PNQ) datée du 6 août 2019.
Lors de cette PNQ, Xavier-Luc Duval, en tant que leader de l’opposition, avait adressé ses questions à Yogida Sawmynaden, alors ministre des TIC. Le premier nommé voulait en savoir plus sur l’octroi de licence radio par l’IBA.
L’IBA, dans son jugement, relève que « at no point did the Honourable Minister Sawmynaden state that he agreed with the Leader of Opposition that the Board of the [IBA] was illegally constituted ». Contrairement à ce qu’avait rapporté Top FM.
Selon l’IBA, Top FM aurait notamment enfreint le Code of Conduct for Broadcasting Services.
« Vendetta ».
« At a time when the press is acting in compliance with regulations of IBA, it is unfair to suspend the licence of Top FM », a estimé Arvin Bolell. « This smacks of Vendetta. I have expressed my indignation to the [Prime Minister] via the Secretary to Cabinet ».
« The political arm of the Executive has chosen to be spiteful and biased », ajoute-t-il, avant de critiquer le Chairman de l’IBA, qualifié de « subservient to the Gorvernment ».
« When he was appointed by the President, I formally protested because he was fully involved in the electoral campaign and was not fit to be in the Chair of IBA », rappelle le leader de l’opposition.
La suspension de la licence de Top FM prendra effet à partir du samedi 4 avril à 6h et s’étendra jusqu’au lundi 6 avril à 6h.
