« Good rides but bad draws ». C’est en ces termes que Bernard Fayd’herbe nous a résumé le 17e acte où seul Scotsnog, engagé dans la dernière manche du championnat des 4-ans, a pu s’imposer pour sauver sa journée. Et quelle victoire!, serait-on tenté de dire, puisque la cravache de l’entraînement Rousset s’offrait par la même occasion son premier Groupe 1 depuis son retour au Champ de Mars.
« I knew it was always going to be a hard day and it ended being just like that. But you’re never disappointed when you win a Group 1 even though I would have been happier with a few more winners. I think the horses ran really well. We survived the day, won the big race and everyone’s happy at the stable ». Il n’y a donc pas eu de nouveau festival Fayd’herbe comme à son retour, mais cela n’a pas empêché le jockey sud-africain de gratifier le public mauricien de quelques somptueuses arrivées, à commencer par Scotsnog, son choix dans l’épreuve principale au détriment de Cherish The Charm.
En effet, après un copybook ride derrière son compagnon d’entraînement, Scotsnog s’est montré tout simplement irrésistible pour aller cueillir son troisième bouquet sur notre turf . « I must say I was confident the whole way with Scotsnog. I had a wonderful race and when I came into the straight, I was able to quickly balance him and I knew then that it would take a very good horse to beat me. During the week, Scotsnog gave me a very good feel and I must say I was pretty sure that I was sitting on the winner », nous a rappelé notre interlocuteur. N’était-ce un Donavan Mansour en état de grâce sur Seven Fountains, la cravache de l’entraînement Rousset aurait dû doubler la mise mais Argun devait au final se contenter du premier accessit dans The Mystic Snow Cup.
« Argun was very unlucky but I sincerely thought it was done. Anyway, well done to the winner and maybe next time it’ll go our way. A wide draw is definitely an issue here because you have to use your horse early on and when you get beat by a short head like today, you always go back and think that it would maybe have made a really big difference if you had been drawn better », a reconnu sportivement le Sud-Africain. Les talents de bon finisseur de Bernard Fayd’herbe étaient de nouveau on display dans la quatrième épreuve où Nothing Compares devait échouer à 0,25L de Blow Me Away, et ce malgré une nouvelle mise en action moyenne.

« When I looked at the replay, I thought maybe I could have caught him (NDLR : Blow Me Away) on the line if I had switched in at the top of the straight. But I had already made my decision and when I came out, the other horses also did the same and I lost a litte bit of ground. But that’s racing, you can’t always plan on how things are going to happen for you ». Canadian Dollar, impressionnant vainqueur à sa sortie précédente, n’a cependant aucune excuse à faire valoir puisqu’il s’est fait battre à la régulière par Five Star Rock, sans doute piégé par le faux rythme proposé par le pensionnaire de l’entraînement R.Gujadhur, qui a bouclé les 1500m dans le temps très moyen de 1m33.07s.
« I must say that I was quite happy with where I was in the field. I just thought he would have kicked better as he did last time. Having said that, I think we should also bear in mind that he’s gone up in class and it’s getting a little bit harder for him. He still ran a decent race though ». En l’absence de son récent vainqueur, l’on aurait pu croire que Colour Of Courage aurait fait sienne l’épreuve de clôture, mais l’alezan s’est à nouveau fait battre par un élève de Ricky Maingard, en l’occurrence Captain’s Cronicle. Tout en reconnaissant que son cheval n’est pas un sujet facile à piloter, Bernard Fayd’herbe estima que le manque de pas initial de Colour Of Courage n’avait rien fait pour arranger les choses.
La journée s’est toutefois conclue sur une note salée pour le cavalier sud-africain, qui a été trouvé coupable de careless riding sur Charles Lytton. Contre sa sanction de deux semaines de mise à pied, le jockey a décidé de faire appel, mais il reste convaincu que le fils de Thomas Crown ne tardera pas à évoluer sur sa valeur sud-africaine. « Charles Lytton was coming back after some problems so I think he probably needed the run. With him, it’s again the same story as he was also drawn bad but I’m sure he’ll be much better next time. He’s a decent horse and I’m sure we’ll be seeing him in the winner’s box pretty soon ».
