GUERRE EN IRAK – CHILCOT REPORT : Diego Garcia entraîné dans une action illégale de Blair

Le rapport de l’enquête de sir John Chilcot, décrétant illégale la guerre contre l’Irak, accusé sans fondement de posséder des Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), rendu public à Londres hier, apporte de l’eau au moulin de ceux qui veulent la fermeture de la base militaire de Diego Garcia. C’est ce qu’avance Lindsey Collen, de Lalit, une des formations politiques à l’avant-garde de la lutte sur les Chagos, après une première analyse des recommandations de l’enquête de sir John Chilcot, qui prend à contre-pied les affirmations de l’ancien Premier ministre, Tony Blair, un des principaux agents de l’ancien président américain, George Bush, dans cette guerre contre l’Irak.
Lindsey Collen soutient que maintenant que la guerre contre l’Irak a été déclarée illégale et sans fondement légitime en droit international, il devient de plus en plus évident que la base américaine de Diego Garcia, une partie du territoire mauricien, a été partie prenante de l’arsenal de guerre des Américains et des Anglais. « The case that the Iraq War was illegal has become stronger with yesterday’s publication of John Chilcot’s Report. This means that it is becoming increasingly probable that illegal military actions were taken from, inter alia, Mauritian soil. Section 111 of the Mauritian Constitution defines Mauritius as including Diego Garcia. This has always been true, and now the 2015 UNCLOS Judgment and last week’s Supreme Court Judgment in the Bancoult case add strong weight to Mauritius’ sovereignty », soutient la porte-parole de Lalit sur les Chagos.
En ce jour où l’extension à l’ultimatum d’une semaine sur les Chagos aux Britanniques expire, Lalit affirme que « it is a serious problem for Mauritius when illegal military action uses Mauritius’ territory. It is well known that B-52 bombers took off from Diego Garcia in order to bombard the city of Baghdad in the reckless Shock and Awe bombings. So, now it is not only illegal “rendering” and torture of illegal prisoners that has taken place on Diego Garcia ; it is not only the flaunting of the Pelindaba Treaty for a Nuclear-Arms Free Africa and the Convention against Land Mines and Cluster Bombs ; now it is becoming increasingly clear through the Chilcot Report that a whole war was illegally conducted from, inter alia, Diego Garcia ».
Dans la conjoncture, Lindsey Collen réitère la demande de fermeture de la base américaine de Diego Garcia. « The Chilcot Report thus gives added weight for the need for Sir Anerood Jugnauth to go ahead in the UN General Assembly and the UN International Court of Justice at The Hague. It also shows the importance of calling for a time-line for base closure. The base is just not compatible with peace in the Indian Ocean, or the world as a whole », conclut Lindsey Collen dans une déclaration au Mauricien tout en s’interrogeant à l’effet que « how is it that Mauritian State did not object to its territory being used for an illegal war ? »
