RAMESHWAR GUJADHUR : Ravatak, une première sur tapis vert

L’histoire retiendra que la première victoire de Ravatak au Champ de Mars a été obtenue sur tapis vert. Outsider à Rs 700 pour une mise de Rs 100 chez certains bookies, le hongre bai de 7 ans, plus d’une fois chuchoté depuis qu’il évolue chez nous, est enfin parvenu à récolter ses premiers lauriers à Maurice au cours d’une journée où l’établissement de Rameshwar Gujadhur ne nourrissait pas de grandes ambitions.
« It’s nice to have a winner as we were not expecting fireworks », a déclaré Donavan Mansour à sa sortie de la jockey’s room samedi après-midi. « Our horses had only outsider chances in their respective races and to have a winner on such a day is just a bonus. »
Commentant la victoire de Ravatak, « a win which I take with both hands », le Sud-Africain nous a confié qu’il accordait une chance à ce coursier surtout en le voyant marcher dans le rond des présentations. « I told Sooboo not to be surprised if we win this one as Ravatak was relaxed and was not sweating at all. His coating looked better and he looked the right one in the ring. »
Selon Mansour, la course s’est déroulée comme prévu. « I’ve watched his videos and I’ve noticed that he is a horse that has a tendency not to finish his races. I decided to drop him out to give him a chance. I then waited for the last moment, i.e. upon entering the home straight. I shook him up and he quickened instantly. » Malheureusement pour la cravache sud-africaine, le passage dans lequel il s’était engagé entre Melson et Mojo G, se referma lorsque le premier nommé changea de ligne pour dériver sur sa gauche. Mansour n’eut d’autre choix que de rediriger sa monture vers l’intérieur tout en la montant à fond. À l’arrivée, rien que 0,65L séparait sa monture de celle de Derreck David. C’est ainsi qu’il décida de loger une objection contre le vainqueur et la victoire finale se joua dans la chambre des commissaires « I was confident in the outcome of the inquiry because had it been without that interference, in my opinion, Ravatak would have won the race by at least one length. I think I was a deserved winner. »
Toujours est-il que Ravatak s’est très bien comporté avec les pacifiers, aver lesquel harnachement il avait très bien travaillé mardi matin. « But to be honest, I don’t know how much confidence that win has brought to the horse. You know, horses like to see them hit the front. The funny thing is that here, Ravatak doesn’t know he has won the race », a-t-il fait ressortir.

Si c’est la première fois qu’il a monté Ravatak en compétition, en revanche c’est la troisième fois que Donavan Mansour retrouvait  Ashanti Gold. Alors qu’on s’attendait à le voir proche du pas dans ce lot où il n’y avait pas de véritable frontrunner, c’est en attentiste qu’évolua le gris, ce qui à bien voir lui fut contre-productif car il ne put jamais faire sentir sa présence.  « Our plan was to go to the front but he was slow at the gates. When I looked up, I was already two lengths behind the front horses. Ashanti Gold is not the type of horse which you can chase around. Had I done that, he wouldn’t have finish his race. I thus rode him in accordance with plan B. I just caught three wide and when I wanted to get in, they chased me out. What can we do, it’s part of the game », s’est désolé Mansour. Toujours est-il que d’aucuns s’accordent à dire que le Sud-Africain nous a habitués à mieux et que la course d’Ashanti Gold doit être mise aux oubliettes.
La course de Joe’s Legacy également est à ignorer en ce sens qu’il a « dropped the bit at the 500m and took no interest in the race. »
Donavan Mansour a aussi bienveillament commenté la course de Bold Inspiration dans la Duchesse. « I actually think he ran a good race. He was not at hundred percent and that race can only benefit him. However, he is a horse that has got his problems and we should constantly look after him. He has got class and at his level best, he should be able to match the top-rated horses here in Mauritius. »
