RICKY MAINGARD : Count Emmanuale was definitely going to win that race, a déclaré Brandon Lerena

Le passage à vide n’a duré qu’une petite semaine pour Brandon Lerena. Alors qu’il s’était fait discret lors du 13e acte qui fut, on le rappelle, dominé de la tête et des épaules par Jeanot Bardottier, la cravache de l’entraînement Maingard s’est très vite remise dans le sens de la marche grâce à Elite Class et Count Emmanuale. Fort de ce doublé, le Sud-Africain rejoint notre compatriote en tête du classement avec 17 réalisations chacun. Qu’on se le dise, le bras de fer est plus que jamais engagé entre ces deux fines cravaches et les semaines à venir devraient ainsi s’annoncer palpitantes.
On voyait mal qui pouvait mater Elite Class après sa démontration du 13 juin dernier où il avait relégué Tiger Island, son plus proche adversaire, à plus de cinq longueurs à l’arrivée. Offert à Rs 130 pour une mise de Rs 100 à la fermeture des paris chez les bookies, le fils de Mogok a été exact au rendez-vous et n’a même pas eu à forcer son talent pour s’imposer en main dans The Prodigal Cup. Mal placé dans les boîtes, Brandon Lerena n’a pris aucun risque et s’est même installé aux commandes, au grand dam de ses adversaires qui ne l’ont revu qu’après le but.
« The horses came into the races well but it was unfortunate that the majority of them were drawn bad. Elite Class won again with authority though. He’s a lovely horse to ride, he gives his all. It was a very good win even if he did it the hard way. The initial plan was to get cover but with that kind of draw, I did not want to be sitting too far back and waiting », nous a d’emblée lâché le co-leader du classement des jockeys samedi dernier. Elite Class donna toutefois l’impression d’abuser quelque peu de la largeur de la piste dans le dernier virage mais son jockey a sa petite idée sur la question. « If you watch his first video, if I don’t have any horse on my outside, you’ll see that he has a tendency to lug. Last time, I had a horse in front of me and another one beside and he just took that corner like a dream. I think he maybe needs a bit of company. The way he’s showing improvement, I don’t think he’ll have any problem competing against tougher opposition next time. But he does deserve a rest now as he’s had a hard campaign since the beginning of the season ».
Elite Class pour le championnat des 4-ans
Un peu plus tôt, Ricky Maingard tenait lui aussi à peu près le même son de cloche quand il intervenait sur la télévision nationale. « C’est un très bon cheval et il fait ce qu’il a à faire. Personne ne voulait aller devant et on avait décidé qu’on imprimerait notre propre train dans ce cas-là sans aller trop vite puisque ce n’était pas nécessaire. Quand je l’avais acheté, je pensais surtout au championnat des 3-ans, mais il n’y en a pas eu cette année. Il va maintenant avoir droit à un peu de repos – il a couru quatre fois déjà, ça suffit – pour revenir en fin de saison. On lui donnera peut-être encore 3-4 courses avant de se tourner vers le championnat des 4-ans l’année prochaine ».
La passe de deux fut réalisée par l’inattendu Count Emmanuale qui s’imposa sur tapis vert après les rétrogradations de Colour Of Courage et Lucky Valentine qui l’avaient précédé à l’arrivée. Interrogé sur cette course, notre interlocteur a été catégorique : il n’aurait pas perdu cette course s’il n’avait pas été gêné. « Count Emmanuale was very well today. He was definitely going to win that race, there’s not doubt about that. I had to hold him up for eight strides and he still managed to have another burst of acceleration. If the other horses had held their line, I would have definitely won that race. We decided to put away the blinkers this time because he was pulling too much and he faded the last bit when I asked him to get a position on his previous outing. Today, they went very fast and it really helped. I guess 1365m should be ok for him but I don’t think he can go further as he won’t get the same pace ».
Un rapide coup d’oeil sur la carte du cavalier sud-africain laissait entrevoir une belle journée pour ce dernier, mais les favoris qu’étaient Bandido Caballero et Top Jet n’ont pu répondre présent, la faute en partie à un mauvais tirage. « Bandido Caballero was still a bit out of his ground. He’s not the kind of horse that you can drive all the way. To be honest, I think they went a bit slow and he would not have run like he did if I had tried to be closer. I would most probably have been caught wide. But you need to have the draw in your favour, especially with a horse like him. The pace really suited the horse that beat me as he too much in front of me and I was on the wrong leg. I was already on a disadvantage but if they had gone faster, Pont D’Avignon would have gone earlier and I would have probably beaten him. Anyway, that’s racing but I really can’t complain because Bandido Caballero ran his heart out ».
« Top Jet needed one more gallop before this race »
Bien que le mauvais tirage n’ait pas aidé Top Jet dans sa quête d’une première victoire au Champ de Mars, c’est surtout le terrain qui n’a pas été à son goût, si l’on se réfère aux dires de Brandon Lerena. « Top Jet did not really enjoy the surface today. I found it quite tacky and with a horse of that quality you feel it more. There was indeed some kick back but what concerned me more was the fact that he was not floating along like he did on Duchess day when the ground was firmer. I think he would also have benefited from one more gallop before this race. We were going to do so last week but the track was washed out. But I’m sure he would have been a better horse on the day if he had benefited from this gallop ».
Des progrès étaient également attendus de la part de Arrowhead et Rowentas qui avaient tous deux montré le bout du nez à leur dernière tentative. Avec le rallongement du parcours, Lerena opta cette fois de courir le premier nommé un peu plus en retrait mais sa monture ne répondit malheureusement pas à ses sollicitations dans l’emballage final. « Arrowhead was still green and dropped the bit at the 500m but that’s where he needed to start getting going because they also did not go fast in his race either. We were thinking that we should maybe be striding but it was his third run and we wanted to give him the best possible chance. It he was in front , it would maybe have been worse. I don’t think the distance was a problem because he was finishing all the way but he was just a bit green ».
Quant à Rowentas, il semble qu’il soit toujours en train de chercher ses marques mais son cavalier ne se fait aucun souci à son sujet. « It was also the same with Rowentas. He started to hand on the final turn. It was only his second run and I think we saw the same with Phiri E Kwatile. He’ll take his time to learn. I think that all of my boss’ horses are the same, they take their time to take a grasp of the track and how racing is around here but he ran on strongly and he’s definitely going to improve more. He looks like he’s the type of horse that needs a bit more ground, so 1400-1500m would probably suit him better ».
