SOUVERAINETÉ TERRITORIALE—CHAGOS: Lalit réclame des initiatives immédiates

Le ministre des Affaires étrangères, Étienne Sinatambou, a accusé réception d’une correspondance officielle de Lalit portant sur la revendication territoriale de Maurice sur les Chagos. Les animateurs de Lalit souhaitent que le nouveau gouvernement mette les bouchées doubles en vue de faire inscrire le dossier des Chagos à l’ordre du jour de la prochaine assemblée générale de l’ONU en septembre prochain.
« LALIT is very pleased that, at long last, political parties that are in government have taken a firm stand in favour of putting a case before the International Court of Justice at The Hague on the issue of the reunification of Mauritius through the completion of Mauritian decolonization by means of the reinclusion of Diego Garcia and the whole of Chagos within the Republic. This huge step means putting into practice what is already in the Constitution », se félicite Lalit dans la lettre officielle au Chef de la diplomatie mauricienne.
En guise de première étape dans cette nouvelle stratégie menant à la Cour internationale de Justice de La Haye, Maurice devra solliciter une « Advisory opinion » car « the United Kingdom does not accept binding jurisdiction from any present (or even former) Commonwealth member or ex-colony ». Dans cette perspective, Maurice n’aura d’autre choix que de rechercher une UN General Assembly Resolution, la période la plus propice étant la prochaine assemblée générale.

Le mouvement de gauche se dit également conscient que Maurice devra s’engager dans une série de consultations et de lobbying à travers le monde pour embrigader le soutien nécessaire à la résolution sur les Chagos aux Nations unies, mais également au sein de la communauté des Chagossiens. « It gives Mauritius the high moral ground if the Mauritian State, at the same time, calls for the beginning of the process of base closure, including putting an end to the stockage and transit of nuclear materials and arms on or through Mauritian land.
