SOUVERAINETÉ TERRITORIALE – CHAGOS  : Londres persiste et signe avec une BIOT Coin

En dépit des appels en vue d’un retour de Maurice « to a constructive path » sur le dossier des Chagos, la Grande-Bretagne persiste et signe dans la voie de la provocation. Sachant pertinemment que Maurice a explicitement soutenu qu’en aucune manière, elle ne reconnaît l’existence de la British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), Londres est passé à une autre étape qui consiste en une émission de pièce commémorative de £ 2 en deux versions avec la BIOT  bien en évidence sur une face et l’effigie de la reine Elizabeth II sur l’autre. Cette nouvelle pièce, dont une version en argent avec une émission limitée à 10 000 pièces et l’autre en cupro-nickel en quantité illimitée, a été lancée hier.
Le communiqué officiel annonçant cette émission frise davantage la provocation car mention est faite que « the Government of the British Indian Ocean Territory has issued (July 27) a new coin highlighting the immense biodiversity of this region. From its indigenous land and airborne creatures to the extraordinary sea inhabitants, the British Indian Ocean Territory is rich and plentiful with an array of diverse and exceptional nature. »
À aucun moment dans le background accompagnant  l’annonce de cette émission dans la dernière édition de Coin News Update, Maurice n’est citée, soit « the British Indian Ocean Territory is situated in the Indian Ocean, between Tanzania and Indonesia, and consists of the seven atolls of the Chagos Archipelago, including more than 55 individual islands. Chagos itself is an archipelago situated in over 250,000 square miles of the world’s cleanest seas. The largest and most southerly island is Diego Garcia, which is home to a population of just over 4,200 people and houses one of the largest U.S. overseas naval and military bases ».
Coin News Update vante également la richesse de la faune et de la flore marines de cette partie du territoire mauricien en rappelant que « Chagos archipelago also contains some of the world’s healthiest coral reefs and the cleanest sea water, sediments, and marine life tested so far in the world. It is a reservoir of biodiversity for an over-exploited ocean. This chain of islands is the southernmost archipelago of the Chagos-Laccadive Ridge, a long submarine mountain range in the Indian Ocean. The Chagos forms a terrestrial eco-region together with the Maldives and the Lakshadweep. »
Sur le Website de Pobjoy Mint, les deux versions de cette pièce – avec au verso « an outline of Diego Garcia Island in the centre of the coin with some of the native wildlife also featured. A turtle, a booby bird, and angelfish can be seen alongside some coral reef at the bottom » – sont mises en vente à £ 12.46 pour le curpo-nickel et à £ 41.63 pour la Proof Sterling Silver Coin.
