No likes of Malalas, of Aung San Suu Kyi, of Fadumo Dayib, of Wangari Mathaii or Hillary Clinton but it is nevertheless a momentous chapter in our history to see a woman of the calibre of Ameenah Gurib-Fakim being elevated to the post of President of the Republic. It is with great honour and joy that Mauritius welcomes its first lady. Very warm congratulations to you Madam President. We also wish to congratulate and thank SAJ, for having recognized the potential contribution of the intellectual class – in this case a scientist of international repute, with many other qualities and talents, who has promised to be ‘Une présidente de proximité’. This appointment is very refreshing especially when the ‘All Male’ front bench of the government, keeps unfurling itself on the MBC ever so often. Professor Gurib-Fakim’s nomination as President also brings hope, especially at a time when the political representation of women has regressed and the Mauritian women’s emancipation/empowerment remains rather slow. The present legislature has 12% of women as compared to 19% in the last one, causing the country to fall from the 10th to the 12th place in the SADC group of countries. Ameenah’s appointment will certainly give the country a boost on the international scene.
