The new and vacant rooms in our minds
we go to endless lengths to furnish
with what we are offered
from lowly levels to heady towers of learning,
knowledge and lores assiduously assimilated.
These rooms in our minds are liable
to become cluttered, and overflow
into streams of otiose utility, doubtful
in nature, ideas not always practicable,
though possibly of intrinsic value;
to our guests with enquiring questions
we know not where to begin, to construe
all that we know.
We manage to find the space somehow
to keep adding to our cognitive storehouse
though we increasingly forget
where we put what, retrieval being an issue;
still, it is good for others to know
the contents of our intellectual showrooms
even when we are out, lights left turned on.
