Après Pierneef une semaine plus tôt, l’entraînement Vincent Allet et son jockey Ryan Wiggins ont enchaîné samedi dernier avec Awesome Adam, qui a causé une petite surprise dans l’épreuve phare. En effet, ce compétiteur ne partait pas avec une première chance et son jockey a attendu le dernier moment, soit l’exercice du tirage au sort des lignes, pour désigner son choix. Autant dire que l’attente en valait la peine car à l’arrivée Awesome Adam lui donna raison.
« I chose him because of the draw, which was a determining factor, especially in such a competitive field. I’m glad that it turned out to be the right choice », confie Ryan Wiggins. « With the good gate, all I wanted was to be as closer as I could. I was able to get him in the right position and round the last corner, I was sweating in for the inside run (rires). Once I got it, Awesome Adam was full of running and he duly obliged », raconte l’Australien.
« I think he is a horse that can go further as long as he keeps improving. He is so relaxed in his races. I think his two runs before that race were good without being overexciting. But on his right distance, with the blinkers on and the good gate, it definitely makes a difference », estime-t-il. À la question de savoir qui d’Awesome Adam ou de Netflix est meilleur, Ryan Wiggins répond : « Probably Netflix is a better horse. He is getting there. I think he is a horse that needs further. So once he goes on more ground and enjoys a nice gate I would obviously be back on. »
Vincent Allet est lui d’avis que Awesome Adam n’a fait que confirmer ses progrès démontrés depuis ses débuts sur notre turf. « Il se portait bien. Il a couru deux bonnes courses avant celle-là. À sa première sortie, je considère qu’il avait été l’auteur d’une bonne prestation derrière un intouchable Elite Class. J’avais remarqué qu’il était un peu perdu ce jour-là. À sa deuxième course, il avait couru en progrès derrière Argun. Je suis content que la troisième a été la bonne », déclare l’entraîneur.
« Maestro’s Salute would have won »
Si Awesome Adam a été un gros motif de satisfaction, en revanche, au rayon des déceptions figure Maestro’s Salute. Ce cheval a été déclaré non-partant par les Racing Stewards après qu’il a été établi qu’il n’a pas obtenu toutes ses chances à l’ouverture des boîtes. Un aléa qui laisse plein de regrets à Ryan Wiggins. « We liked him a lot. He ran a tremendous race last time out and we thought that he stood a big chance the more so that he was dropping in category. Obviously he was declared a non-runner, which is good for the public as I didn’t get a fair start. But when I saw Schachar struggling from where we were in the race, I was pretty sure that had Maestro’s Salute been in front, he would have won. »
What’s News est l’autre coursier qui a laissé Ryan Wiggins sur sa faim. Pourtant, ce cheval avait une belle carte à jouer de sa 3e ligne dans l’épreuve d’ouverture, mais à l’arrivée il termina 8e à 4, 30L de Chester’s Wish. « We thought he could win but he’s one of these kind of horses in whom you cannot put your trust. Last time I had a bad run and he ran a descent race. This time I had a good run but he ran a bad race. »
Wiggins s’attendait par ailleurs à de bons débuts de l’imposant Shap Shap (ndlr : 551 kg à la pesée vendredi matin). Mais cette nouvelle unité devait saigner en course. « I’m more disappointed for the owners. Over and above that he bled, I actually think that a 1000m is too short for him because of his corpulence. But we have to start somewhere. Shap Shap is a strong horse and once he gets to the front on a longer distance, he will take much beating », prévient-il.
Pour ce qui est des prestations de Streetbouncer et de Buffalo Trip, la cravache australienne trouve que « Streetbouncer is getting a little bit old. I was very disappointed the way he jumped and put himself in the race. I’ll suggest to Vincent that we try him over 1365m as a 1000m is probably too fast and too competitive for him at the moment. Buffalo Trip was in a sort of race where obviously he wouldn’t be able to lead as last time. He struggled in the last 50m. He gave the impression that he could compete for a place but he dropped down. Still he ran a honest race. May be if he can go back in his category and on a shorter trip, he can make amends. »
Même si une victoire est bonne à prendre, Ryan Wiggins, qui avait une full card samedi dernier, pense tout de même qu’il y avait de la place pour mieux faire. Mais après avoir analysé la course des uns et des autres, il préfère relativiser. « A couple of the horses we liked had their excuses », conclut-il.
