COMMONWEALTH : Maurice n’accueillera pas le CHOGM 2015

De nouveaux développements sont intervenus depuis la décision du Premier ministre, Navin Ramgoolam, de boycotter le sommet du Commonwealth se déroulant ce week-end au Sri Lanka. Maurice n’accueillera pas le prochain Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit en 2015. La confirmation a été donnée officiellement par le Premier ministre lors du Statement Time à l’Assemblée nationale, hier après-midi. Des instructions ont été communiquées au ministre des Affaires étrangères, Arvin Boolell, pour informer officiellement le Commonwealth Secretariat de la décision de Maurice.
La décision d’abandonner le projet d’accueillir le sommet du Commonwealth à Maurice en 2015 s’inscrit dans le cadre du respect du protocole et des conventions au sein de ce club des anciennes colonies britanniques. « I have given instructions to Hon. Arvin Boolell, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade who is attending the Summit in Sri Lanka to inform the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, that Mauritius does not wish to create a precedent and break with Conventions. Since I have taken the decision not to attend the Summit, and therefore I cannot invite them personally, Mauritius has decided to rescind its offer to host CHOGM 2015 in order to avoid departing from Convention regarding handing over », a déclaré Navin Ramgoolam.
Le Premier ministre a ajouté que cette question de conventions avait été évoquée par le secrétaire general du Commonwealth, Kamalesh Sharma précédemment. « The Secretary-General also told me that if Mauritius wants to host the Summit in 2015, it is imperative that I should be present personally for the handing over ceremony. He explained that this is the Convention and tradition and that it would be unprecedented if I did not attend. As I forcefully stated in my reply to a Private Notice Question on the subject on Tuesday last, human rights are for me far more important than hosting the Summit, however prestigious it may be », s’est-il appesanti.
Le chef du gouvernement, qui est revenu sur les raisons derrière son absence au sommet du Sri Lanka, notamment le génocide et les violations des Droits de l’homme, se félicite de l’accueil réservé à sa décision. « I am glad to note that the decision for me not to attend the Summit in Sri Lanka has been fully endorsed by all the Members of the House and has been acclaimed by the local and international press as well as the Prime Minister of Canada », a-t-il ajouté à l’Assemblée nationale, hier après-midi.
