RAMESHWAR GUJADHUR : I actually thought the winning streak would end, a déclaré Mansour

Plus rien n’arrête l’entraînement Rameshwar Gujadhur et son jockey Donavan Mansour. Ce duo fait feu de tout bois en ce début de saison et se retrouve chaque semaine dans la winner’s enclosure.
Pourtant, les choses semblaient mal engagées samedi dernier et c’est sans doute avec un grand ouf! de soulagement que la bande à Rameshwar Gujadhur a accueilli la victoire de Lucky Valentine dans la grande course. « I actually thought our winning streak would come to an end. I was a bit worried as we were running out of races and there was only one bullet left in the barrel. So, we needed to take our chances with both hands on Lucky Valentine. Luckily he did what was expected from him », a déclaré Donavan Mansour. « You know, I came here with a goal, that to be crowned champion jockey. It’s important for me to keep up to standard my striking rate and winning races is the only way to achieve that goal », a-t-il ajouté.
Pour revenir à Lucky Valentine, sans diminuer ses mérites, d’aucuns pensent qu’il a été pour le moins chanceux dans The Raoul Halbwachs Cup en ce sens que si Top Jet n’avait pas été sévèrement gêné suite à la faute de Ramgopal sur Charles Lytton, au point de buter, le résultat aurait pu être tout autre. En effet, malgré la sévère gêne subie, le gris trouva moyen de se rapprocher vivement dans la dernière ligne droite pour n’échouer qu’à 0,50L de l’élève de Rameshwar Gujadhur. « He did nothing wrong since the beginning of the season. On Saturday, the only way for him to win was to go to the front. He was up in class and you need to respect horses like Charles Lytton and Top Jet. Fortunately he won a nice race. »
« Lucky Valentine was only at 90% »
Commentant le déroulement de l’épreuve, “Don Man” a déclaré qu’il n’a pas voulu mettre la pression sur sa monture en début de course afin de garder suffisamment de ressources pour bien finir. « At the end of the day, I was happy I was in front as I heard a lot of things happening behind me. I was able to give him a breather and that helped him to quicken in the home straight. » Selon lui, Lucky Valentine n’était pas à son meilleur niveau samedi. « He was not as good as he was when he ran against Chinese Gold. I think that day he was at hundred percent. On Saturday, he was only at 90% ».
Pourquoi alors avoir opté pour une course en compagnie relevée si le cheval n’était pas à cent pour cent de ses moyens?  « He has got his share of racing so far this season. Since he is a small horse, we prefer to have him in a race where he has less weight on his back. In the fifth race, in which he was also nominated, he would have carried 61,5kg. Also, there were a few potential pacemakers in that race whereas in the main one, he was the only pacemaker », a dit Mansour en guise d’explication.
Toujours est-il qu’il pense que les choses seront plus dures pour Lucky Valentine désormais. « I don’t think he has been in this rating before. As he is not the easiest horse to ride, I think it’s gonna be hard for him as from now. If we can squeeze another one with him, that would be great. »
Avant la victoire de Lucky Valentine, les choses ne paraissaient pas si simples pour le Sud-Africain et son établissement avec la défaite du favori Eastward Bound dans l’épreuve d’ouverture. Idéalement placé, il ne put changer de vitesse dans la dernière ligne droite pour finir à 2L de Kentucky Bluegrass.
La cravache sud-africaine avait une chance de se racheter dans l’épreuve suivante avec Unbridled Joy qui, à l’occasion, descendait de classe. Si tactiquement il tenta crânement sa chance, il eut la malchance de tomber sur un Karraar en pleine ascension. « I think he was beaten by a better horse », concède Mansour.
Quant à Groen Gevaarte, 4e a 2,65L de King’s Knight, il est d’avis qu’il avait besoin de cette première sortie. « It was a good experience for him. He was a bit green in the back straight. He can only improve from that run. » A noter que ce coursier de 3 ans n’était qu’à la quatrième course de sa jeune carrière, soit la première après sa castration.
