- Dakota Brooke Lai Chin Kon décroche le prix du « Best Position Paper » et Breyten Bartheleumeus Cloete, celui de « Best Delegate of Youth Assembly »
La Northfields International High School (NIHS), sise à Mapou dans le Nord de l’île, s’est distinguée à la 16e conférence de la Dubaï International Academy Model United Nations (DIAMUN), qui s’est tenue à Emirates Hill ce mois-ci. Dakota Brooke Lai Chin Kon, élève en Year 10, a décroché le prix du Best Position Paper et Breyten Bartheleumeus Cloete, élève en Year 8 celui de Best Delegate of Youth Assembly. Le thème cette année : Innovating Towards a Sustainable Future.
La délégation de NIHS était composée de 24 élèves des Grades 8 à 10. Ils étaient accompagnés des enseignantes Tamiyendi Rungasamy, également assistante principale responsable de Student life and Well-Being, Trishini Mathura et Rookshaal Nobeebux, dirigeantes du club MUN de l’établissement.
Les participants sont sortis grandis de cette expérience, ayant favorisé l’échange avec des jeunes de leur âge issus de plusieurs régions du monde et permettant de prendre connaissance et de proposer des solutions aux grands défis auxquels est confronté le monde.
À Le-Mauricien, Breyten Bartheleumeus Cloete témoigne : « I learned something really important: sometimes it’s not about how well you do, but how hard you try. I learned that if you keep worrying about failing, you will never succeed. During the conference there were some difficult questions that I got asked and I did not always know how to answer them but I pushed through and used the advice that the teachers gave me, which led me to speaking confidently towards the question ». Ainsi, ajoute-t-il, « failing is better than not trying ».
Quant à Dakota Brooke Lai Chin Kon, elle affirme : « For the short time that I was at the conference, I have grown as a person, being pushed out of my comfort zone, and being forced to polish and perfect my skills in order to perform to the best of my abilities (…) In DIAMUN, I found not only a platform for advocacy but a community of individuals from all across the world united for a common purpose, portraying admirable collaborations and who helped teach me the value of patience, perseverance, diplomacy and encouraging me to take the initiative, find my voice and speak up about my opinions and contributions. We all pushed each other in endless debates, acting as world leaders solving the current most important problems at hand, realizing that diplomacy wasn’t about winning the arguments but about finding common ground and terms to which we could all agree to ».
En outre, Quinn Faragher a reçu la mention honorable du Conseil des droits de l’Homme, Somassegaren Permall, la mention honorable de la Commission des Nations unies pour la science et la technologie pour le développement et Eja Milanto Rasoanindrainy, la reconnaissance de la Cour internationale de Justice. Les trois nommés sont élèves en Year 10.
MUN est un programme international qui donne l’occasion aux élèves de se mettre dans la peau des délégués des pays membres des Nations Unies et de participer à une simulation des conférences où ils prennent position pour leurs pays respectifs et proposent des solutions aux problèmes cruciaux de la société. L’objectif est de les pousser à se dépasser intellectuellement et à élargir leurs horizons.
