Dear Prime Minister
My interest in the Chagos issue arose in 2004 after watching the moving documentary "Stealing a Nation". On the day David Snoxell left Mauritius after retiring as the UK's High Commissioner, I suggested that he devote himself to the plight of the Chagossians. This is how my habit of giving unsolicited advice started.

Mauritians, time to wake up.
What is happening in Mauritius concerns you?
It should!

Mauritians, time to wake up.
What is happening in Mauritius concerns you?
It should!
The DPP saga is an abysmal example.
I declare a perceived conflict of interest,
he is fortunate to be married to my only sister!
Now we have cleared this detail, ask yourself
where is the spirit of due process?
You should be bothered.
Are you?
Let me share with you my thoughts on BULLIES.
They are characteristically WEAK.
It is shambolic to sit quietly and fear institutional
government BULLYING

Today, let us ponder on something that is very dear to Mauritians.  Let us momentarily forget about the CCID trips, ICAC, conflicts of interest, fraud and corruption that have been the talk of the town…Let us meditate on something that is close to home, that strikes a raw nerve and that is definitely worth its weight in gold! Yes, I am referring to a particularly ‘big weight’ which fulfils the stomachs of Mauritians and foreign visitors alike, which is a defining factor of our typical Mauritian cuisine; the humble ‘Gros Pois’ (butter beans). ‘Gros Pois’ curry is particularly appreciated when it is served with ‘dhall-puris’, another Mauritian staple, which is sold in every nook and corner of the island.

The visit of Josian Sebastian from Mauritius, a father who accompanied his daughter of 10 years old to look for medical treatment in Australia, told me that many facilities for children suffering from certain diseases are not available in Mauritius, and that is the reason he is in Australia.

For more than 2 decades we have been struggling for a complete ban of asbestos in Mauritius.  In 1999, one of our members namely Mr. Claude Marguerite died of a mesothelioma.  We applied before the Supreme Court to exhume the corpse and to proceed with an asbestos fibre count in the lungs of late Comrade Marguerite.  At that time we benefited from the support of Prof. Hasselton from Manchester University for the count.  We also benefited from the support of Dr. Pravin Oogarah, a specialist in cancer, and the former student of Prof. Hasselton.

The Global Business Sector (“GBS”), previously known as the “offshore” sector, is arguably an important pillar of the Mauritian economy. The GBS together with the banking and insurance sectors constitute the Financial Services Sector (FSS). According to a study by the Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) issued in May 2012, the contribution of the FSS to the Mauritian economy reached 10.1% of GDP in 2011 and the number of employees in the FSS was estimated at 13,500 in 2011 and was expected to reach 17,500 by 2015.

The tradition of Iftaar (fast-breaking) must surely rank as one of the world’s greatest social events of people coming together.  During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast, pray and celebrate together while also trying to be thoughtful and generous to friends and family, but especially to the needy and poor.  It is a month of warmth, compassion and generosity.  Notwithstanding the intense spiritual values embodied by Ramadan, it is the popular tempo, the folklore and cultural traditions, marked by the vibrant atmosphere of Iftaar that mostly attract the attention of the outside public.

Dear Authorities,

Mauritius is an Island of intrigue. The clear turquoise Indian Ocean hugs the palm-strewn white beaches. Friendly warm smiles invite thousands of tourists from around the world to explore the coastal towns and inland villages between the sea and the many emerald green Sugar Cane fields. To appreciate and savor the flavors of Island dishes, refresh and restore mind and body before heading back to our own residential homes abroad.

The importance of SMEs and entrepreneurs in developing local African economies and intra-Africa trade can’t be ignored – they make up 90% of private business in Africa and contribute to more than 50% of employment and GDP. In Mauritius, entrepreneurship has followed a successful historical path, with its potential to contribute to the country’s economic development first realised in the 1970s. Both the Mauritian Government and the private sector are giving recognition and support to  entrepreneurship development. In addition, low corporate taxes in the country allow SMEs to devote more money to researching and developing new ideas.

Greece! Known for its ancient ruins, breath-taking sights, and raw nature, it is full of history. A history which I feel privileged to have known. As part of a Youth Programme, in collaboration with SCI Hellas and the European Union, my brief stay of five weeks in this country has proved to be fruitful, on both a personal and a professional level. This programme aims at ensuring that water becomes and remains a human right and a common good, not a commodity for profit-making. My purpose in Greece is to help develop strategies to understand and combat the various water issues prevailing here. Throughout my journey, I have uncovered many layers of the Greek water history which unfortunately mirrors innumerable issues.

ince gaining its independence in 1968, Mauritius has come a long way during these past 46 years. One big step towards addressing the inequality problem has been free education at secondary level granted in 1977. This was extended to tertiary education in 1988. The efforts to sort out the inequality issue did not stop there and went on in 2005 to also include free bus transport and more recently free contribution to SC and HSC exams.

“Ehelepola had hoped to succeed to the vacant throne and when he realized that the British were not going to restore native kingships, he began to stir rebellion against British rule. On 3 March 1818 he was therefore arrested with several other Kandyan chiefs, detained in Colombo until 1825 and then exiled to Mauritius where about 30 Kandyans were already detained.” (1)

Horse lovers in Mauritius and across the world have their favorite equine champions. Some love the stayers which compete the French Arc de Triomphe, or the milers of the St. James Palace Stakes in Britain, or the Melbourne Cup's list of legends, and of course the classic champions of the Champ de Mars.

Some love the stayers which compete the French Arc de Triomphe, or the milers of the St. James Palace Stakes in Britain, or the Melbourne Cup's list of legends, and of course the classic champions of the Champ de Mars. But for me as a horse-lover, there is a special breed of thoroughbred heroes, who stand as an intangible symbol for equine perfection through their ethereal elegance, their impossible speed tamed with spectacular endurance, and their running amidst history and reaching for immortality.

After the elections of Dec 2014, the Ensam core team has met regularly to discuss the way forward. We more than understand that political movements take their rightful time to gather momentum and we did not expect miracles in the first six months of existence. Last year we invested of ourselves into campaign and the elections because we thought that there was a gap in the system.

Pran Chopra was cursing his luck, as he trudged along the busy streets of Port Louis.  When he was near Victoria bus station, A No-To-Crap (NTC) Company bus suddenly let out a jet of black fumes, which left him in a coughing fit. His eyes were watery as he gasped for air, until he felt a phlegmy lump forcefully make its way up his throat.

Before Independence

An elected municipalité, chaired by an equally elected mayor, operated in each district, during the French period, from 1790 to 1803. The functions included re-construction and repair of places of worship, public works, public health, security in public places and upkeep of public property. Only select males aged 25, and afterwards 21 years were electors.

Nowadays, more and more women in Mauritius are participating in the more professional world as they are more educated. Furthermore, people are finding it very challenging to make both ends meet and hence their contribution to the family budget has
become more of a necessity. A common pattern is
witnessed when a majority of women, doing well
academically, enter the professional world; they get married, have to take care not only of their parents but also of their in-laws, have children and then starts the “merry go round” with its never ending list of additional responsibilities.

The Tertiary Education Commission has been at the centre of a number of controversies over the past 3 years which has resulted in bad press. And yet it is a key player in the development of the country. If I had to reimagine the role of the TEC in the 21st Century, I would be boldly ambitious.
