»It must be admitted that the government is spending millions of public money every year on private bus owners and bus companies to meet the travelling expenses of students and elderly people. On a number of occasions there have been complaints against bus drivers intentionally refusing to pick up old persons at the bus stop. This is purely and simply an act of daylight robbery committed by bus companies. The present scheme of Free Transport is heavily flawed in that it allows bus companies and private bus owners to make windfall profits when they refuse embarking old persons. Also, not all elderly people travel by bus all through the day. The Confederation proposes that direct financing of bus owners/bus companies be stopped against the payment of a fixed sum in the range of Rs 700 to Rs 1 000 to all elderly people or such sum be grafted on their pension », soutient Narendranath Gopee, président de la NTUC.

»It was strongly canvassed in the course of the electoral campaign and the thrust with which it was sold from the soap box created a strong feeling of trust in the population that brought around the victory of party. There was an expectation that Government would come with a relevant bill and thereafter proceed in parliament to enact the Right to Information Act.
