As One People, As One Nation — A Message of Hope and Solidarity

By Angkush Poonye

Across our island, hearts unite,

Holding on to hope and light,

Beyond religion, beyond ethnic ties,

One nation’s hope beneath these skies.

We stand as one in your hour of need,

Élodie, may you find the strength to heal.

A thousand prayers, a nation’s plea,

May hope restore your strength and energy.

You are a mother, so young, so dear,

With a little one longing to have you near,

A tiny hand, a loving embrace,

Longing to feel your warmth, your face.

May the doctors who come from afar

Bring healing and hope, like a guiding star,

May strength return with each new day,

And lead you gently on your way.

For you are more than news we read,

You are a life, a hope, a dream.

And in this moment, we stand as one,

Praying your story is far from done.

Enn sel lepep, enn sel nation,

Ansam dan lespwar ek konpasion.

Élodie, nou tou ansam avek twa,

Nou leker, nou lapriyer, avek twa.

Ki nou relizion, nou kouler, nou orizin,

Nou swet twa kouraz ek gerizon.

To zanfan bizin twa, Élodie,

Ki lavi redonn twa enn nouvo sourir.

THE INVISIBLE KILLER

My mother’s abdominal pain become chronic. Diagnosis kept changing. Guess work became the code word. Several X-ray reports still failed to confirm concrete diagnosis. All the family members forgot their meals as they were held as hostages by some powerful and unknown force. Our focus was undeniably on our mother’s health.

Surgical intervention was the only option. The discovery choked us all. The abdominal opening was sealed on the spot after samples of the diseased parts were removed as specimen, pathological tests were carried out to determine the cause of that misery. The lab tests are going to unveil the monster that was responsible for unbearable pain in the form of mushroom like growth resembling bulbs of the intestine.

When I reported for the test result, my limbs were cramped, fingers crossed, hand folded, I kept murmuring the sacred verses from holy scripture as to protect my mother’s health. But the pathologist had already printed his verdict. His advice crucified me. “Fulfill her wishes during the forthcoming months…” I was dumb. Leaf almost halted. Limbs were cramped.

Defeated, I left the lab dumb. Pain continued on both sides. We were already dead. She became an in-patient at the radiotherapy was. Why? My mother guessed it right. We wanted to remove the enemy from her body. The surgeon decided to ‘chop’ the diseased part of the intestine. Helpless, we just knelt down to the doctor’s proposal. Out priority was our mother’s health. We were ready for a second surgery. We were stuck by another lightening. Almost dead!. Pain killers were never able to bring that smile on out mother’s face.

Still loss of weight was inevitable. Hair falls just followed as the killer cells continued to invade the other organs. Dressing was changed regularly. Repeated injections perforated her arm. Her legendary smile gave way to a defeated face always fighting to bear the atrocious pain.

At last, she passed away leaving us dead expecting that one day science will be able to overcome this terrible enemy.
