A new report by the United Nations Labour Agency has warned that global unemployment soared in 2012 amid the shaky economic situation and the lack of sufficient policies to tackle the issue holistically. It is disheartening to note that the youth are more likely to suffer the most as they are most vulnerable, lacking experience in the world of work and less prone to face the situation with maturity and stoicism.

On 3 July 2013, Le Mauricien reported that Minister Bunwaree chaired the first working session of the Comité des Sages which has been set up to look into the elaboration of a curriculum for the teaching of History of Mauritius at both primary and secondary levels. This project is a historical reparation to the Nation for the harm done to scores of Mauritian generations who have gone through our education system and exiting without any critical notion of the history of their own country.

We were stunned not to say flabbergasted to hear last week a member of the Opposition castigating the Chinese workers and dubbing them as ‘prisoners’. Such allegation is false, malicious and vexatious. Wagging tongue must know what it mutters.

Such allegation is false, malicious and vexatious. Wagging tongue must know what it mutters. Unless we show sheer ignorance of reality or we are myopic we can make such false and malicious allegations. For God’s sake make constructive opposition. “Ingratitude thy name is”, Shakespeare wrote. There is no sector where China has not left its imprints.

Mauritius has always been a multicultural island where people have learned to live together as ONE nation. I have always been proud to be a Mauritian and I will always thank God for that. Mauritius has been rich in culture and traditions, which is unfortunately changing due to globalization and modernization.

Mauritius has been rich in culture and traditions, which is unfortunately changing due to globalization and modernization. Youngsters tend to forget their history, culture and what our ancestors have taught us. They do not care about the current situation in Mauritius and what they can do to improve it. Drugs, alcohol and other forms of entertainment easily influence them.

The resounding success of Sona Noyan’s Shradhanjali Gamat Nite on Friday 31st May, at Trois Bras, Petit Raffray has come to prove, beyond doubt, the vibrancy and resilience of Bhojpuri language and its intangible Cultural Heritage. Indeed, the Pandaal/ la tente- pavilion put up by the Petit Raffray Village Council and the Rivière du Rempart Village Council was packed beyond capacity. The seating accommodation proved inadequate and the huge effervescent audience composed of men, women and children had to contend itself standing for hours. For, the event starting at 7.30 pm, continued right till one in the morning of the next day. As if to keep with the tradition of gamat singing! And… dil mangey more- the crowd asked for more. The frenzied youth of Trois Bras could not help but occupy the narrow space between the podium and first rows of chairs and dance the night to the rhythmic dhun of Bhojpuri gamat music.

Nick Ross, 65, who has presented Crimewatch in the UK from 1984 to 2007 has recently caused widespread offence with his views on rape. Whilst agreeing that no amount of temptation can excuse rape, yet, he likened women who dressed and behaved provocatively to banks storing cash by the front door or motorists leaving their laptops on the back seat of their cars. He believed that some women chose not to pursue their complaints because they felt partly responsible for the rape they have suffered.  This is outdated and indeed ridiculous - a rape is a rape - there is no contributory liability!!

The Mauritius Institute of Training and Development (MITD) case is hitting headlines since December 2012. Since then, it is becoming more and more the talk of educators at school and even in classroom where pupils are questioning their teachers about such a messy stuff. Hearing has been conducted, cases have been filed in court, PQs are being raised and some are calling for more forceful actions.

A former British Energy Secretary has been released from prison last week. Chris Huhne and his ex-wife Vicky Price have just finished serving 62 days inside for perverting the course of justice. The former MP had asked his ex-wife to take three speeding points for him a decade ago. The lie was revealed this year by Price and as soon as Huhne was found guilty of perverting the course of justice, he resigned as a Member of Parliament.

At the pinnacle of its imperial power Great Britain had loaded up so much of gold in the Bank of England that the floor is jokingly said to have collapsed. The British Empire declined in importance and power gradually shifted to the US. The US collected its war debts and the gold was shipped to the US. In a few years the US had the world's largest stockpile of gold in Fort Knox, Kentucky. In 1948 US gold reserves had shot up to 22,000 tons.

Just for the record—lest you might forget: Immediately after the 7 pm collective dinner inside the thatched hut, all the six children hurriedly gathered around my mother on her bed. Why? To listen to her relishing stories. Of all, she was very fond of those on the RAMAYANA.

On Friday, 3rd May 2013, exactly a week ago today, our country was struck by yet another national tragedy. It was a day of sadness, horror and sheer terror. It is quite often that we think that large-scale deadly calamities can never happen to us in Mauritius and we, Mauritians, are safe from such tragedies and it happens elsewhere. However, the deaths of 11 of our fellow citizens on 30th March and 10 others on 3rd May make us ponder about how human life is precarious.
