Dear Susheela,

Dear Susheela,
When we met a few years ago while you were on holiday in my village in Tamarin, I was sad that you did not give a concert in Mauritius. I was so happy when I heard that at last you were coming back to perform in our country... but now I am even more upset because a bunch of Tamil integrists forbid you to sing Paal.

Prior to January 2011, Mauritius would have been mentioned in the Irish press in ads as a heavenly destination, with a promotion of the island for honeymooners especially. Ironically, honeymooners were at the centre of a tragedy that shook Mauritians and Irish people alike. The murder of Michaela Harte was doubly shocking since she was not only on her honeymoon, but also the daughter of a well-known figure in the Irish sports world. In the immediate aftermath of the murder, Mauritius was splashed all over the papers and the news.

It is the responsibility of the state to protect its citizens. The decriminalization of abortion should be seen as a step forward to strengthen women’s rights. In this new endeavour, women will not feel marginalised, especially in cases of unwanted pregnancies due to malfunction of foetus, rape or incest. Further, women should not be considered as mere objects of procreation.

Dear THE BAT,
I have understood that you had a Sister which was physically present in our Island since 1926 but unfortunately, in 2007, she was delocalised to Kenya due to “production cost increases”.

The country is at the threshold of what could possibly mark a significant turning point for society. While we wait patiently for the outcome from parliament, it is no surprise that the two radical camps, the pro-life and the pro-choice are at loggerheads again. Unfortunately, while the battle rages, there is a tendency to fall in absolutes.

Recent national and international events have turned the spotlights on an integral feature of our existence. A vital feature, which is prone to never-ending fluctuations, thrills, a balanced dose of humour and seriousness but which is still central in the running of most modern states. That feature is none other than politics.

Many people who use the road from Beau-Bassin to Bambous, must have noticed a small portion of land which ressembles the American cemeteries: the St-Martin Cemetery. Not much has been written about this part of the history of Mauritius. In her book “The Mauritian Shekel”, which by the way I strongly recommend, Geneviève Pitot unveils some of the secrets of the cemetery.

The Plaza theatre is one of our cultural and historical sites which we should strive to preserve. This theatre has brought much to the community but nevertheless it has been neglected since some years for some reason or the other.
This magnificent building is one of our most beautiful architectural edifices in Mauritius. It is unique by virtue of its Italian style. The Plaza was firstly built for theatrical purposes as the name ‘Plaza Theatre’ suggests, but for some reasons it was also used as a cinema house. It has staged many famous masterpieces.

Information is power.  Few people can make a living, hold their governments accountable, and educate their children without a healthy supply of free-flowing information. Citizens need accurate, timely, independent news they can trust.  So do businesses and markets.  And so do governments.
Media freedom keeps societies and economies vibrant, energetic, and healthy.  When the free flow of news and information is cut off, individuals suffer. Societies suffer. Economies suffer.

Why should freedom of expression and freedom of the press be allowed? Why should a government which is doing what it believes to be right allow itself to be criticized?

Why should freedom of expression and freedom of the press be allowed? Why should a government which is doing what it believes to be right allow itself to be criticized? It would not allow opposition by lethal weapons. Ideas are much more fatal things than guns. Why should any man be allowed to buy a printing press and disseminate pernicious opinion calculated to embarrass the government?

Dear MCB Friends,
Allow me to congratulate your venerable institution on your forthcoming 175th anniversary. I read with much interest your “Make a Wish” challenge to primary schools to think about the “Maurice Ile Durable” initiative, specifically how they would align themselves with the cherished goal of sustainability in resources and the environment.

The prime objective of our National anthem, was at the very outset, the unity of the Mauritian population because it is through unity that we can make progress. As goes the saying “United we stand, divided we fall.” Have we achieved that aim or are we still on “rodage” ? Because after more than four decades of independence we are still not a nation though we are supposed to be having “the father of the nation.” Which nation ? On the contrary, we are more divided than ever though we are humming the national anthem since nearly half a century.

The education system in Mauritius is largely based on the British system since Mauritius was a former British colony. After the country became independent in 1968, education became one of the main preoccupations of the Mauritian Government to meet the new challenges awaiting the country. Education has been free through the secondary level since 1976 and through the post-secondary level since 1988. Since July 2005, the government also introduced free transport for all students.

The Dutch.
They chased, raped, killed, ate and finished the last of the stupid and naive birds.

Look son.
Look, this is the picture of the stupid bird who stopped flying and when men came, he was unable to escape and he sat passively awaiting for his death.
Look how majestic of a bird he was...
