Transforming Violence into Peace through Meditation

Peace, bliss, love, forgiveness and intelligence are like hidden treasures in the depth of our being. No amount of morality, imposed disciplines, religious commandments or laws can stop violence in any form unless there is a radical mind transformation.

Meditation means inner silence and expansion of consciousness leading to the experience of bliss, inner peace, oneness and cosmic love. With even a small percentage of the population practising meditation, great positive changes are bound to occur.

A profound understanding of human nature is possible only when the gaze is turned inward. Total acceptance of violence, anger or hatred as a form of our own energy is the first step. There should be no rejection, no escape, no suppression. Then, seek to understand its source and become more and more aware of it.

Sharp awareness can only be attained through meditation. Virtue cannot be inculcated but rather churned out from the soul.

In any act of violence, a great amount of raw energy is released for a short period and it is destructive. Frustration, greed, anger, lust, hatred, jealousy and indifference are forms of violence which harm both others and oneself. These too generate raw energies that can be refined through meditation and understanding.

One should not categorise or judge, but rather accept the crude traits totally with full awareness. Once refined, they become fuel for the expansion of consciousness. Consciousness or awareness is like a fire that burns all the impressions, habits and conditionings of the mind as it expands. It acts like a beacon that dissipates the inner darkness and eliminates the root cause of all forms of conflict.

Of course, one will first have to learn how to become more aware through the science of meditation. Through meditation, all human emotions can be transformed, thus making us calmer, more responsible and loving.

When we are not aware, violence, anger or for that matter, any emotion reaches the brain and once we get identified with it, we wreak havoc. Those who want to be a master of their moods, emotions, thoughts and attitudes should definitely practise meditation.

It is a mystery that although the very essence of life is ineffable silence, yet we have to practise a science to experience it! The whole world may be beautiful, but it is all pointless or meaningless for the one who is asleep. Man is slumbering as a result of his long and deep unconsciousness. He will have to be shaken and disturbed so that he starts seeking.

Berret, a disciple of Gurdjieff, has very appropriately written a dedication in his autobiography wherein he refers to his master as ‘The Breaker of my Sleep.’ Indeed, only an enlightened being can do that work.

In a contribution of UNESCO, we read the following: “A peace based exclusively upon the political and economic arrangements of governments would not be a peace which could secure the unanimous, lasting and sincere support of the peoples of the world, and the peace must therefore be founded, if it is not to fail, upon the intellectual and moral solidarity of mankind.” This can certainly be achieved by the science of meditation.

The first sign of a healthy and civilised society is peace and harmony. And it all starts with individual transformation. What avails an individual who has gained everything except inner peace? And if we wish to have world peace, then we need a global mind change.

Meditation is the ultimate inner alchemy. Thus, my vision of a global mind transformation through the science of meditation. And that does not cost much. As we dedicate many hours at school to study a subject, similarly we should be ready to study our mind and its relationship with the heart, the body and the environment.

Without such endeavour, I do not see anything concrete manifesting. Many people have much free time which they spend in useless activities that lead nowhere. There is nothing more lamentable than this. Time is eternity. We can use time to experiment with the mind.

Transforming violence into peace is not a miracle but a process from unconsciousness to awakening through inner transformation. The path to peace begins within the individual, extends into families and communities, and ultimately embraces the whole world.

Let us set to work together for the attainment of global peace for humanity is one family, bound together by the heartbeat of creation. I have dedicated my life to my vision of a global mind transformation that will trigger the greatest blessing to mankind. I invite all fellow human beings to be ready to learn the art and science of mind transformation, which is meditation. That would be the noblest act of all times.
