DERRECK DAVID : Gilbert Rousset is just phenomenal

« First of all, I’d like to say well done to Gilbert. To get 700 winners in Mauritius is quite something. I thought it would have been Max Rapax and Pont D’Avignon but in the end the little man (NDLR : Millenimesta) did it. I’m happy for the owners and the stable. I’m only here as a temporary bypasser and I know there’ll be more jockeys after me but I’m really proud to be part of the third biggest achievement of the stable this year after reaching the 673 wins, my five winners in a day and now the 700th for Gilbert, it’s been a big season so far », nous a rappelé Derreck David à sa sortie de la jockey’s room samedi dernier.
« Gilbert Rousset is just phenomenal. There are actually no words to describe how good he is as a trainer. He’s got such an eye for a horse, he could simply see it working and tell me « we don’t need to do anymore with that horse », a-t-il poursuivi. « I think he would do really good if he was training abroad but he’s old now and I don’t think he would ever want to leave Mauritius. This is where he is happy and he does really well. For me, he’s one of the best trainers I’ve ridden for ».
« Pont D’avignon was not the same »
« I don’t know if Pont D’avignon is a bit tired because he did not want to gallop early on. It’s true that he was unbalanced in the home straight but there was still something wrong with him today. I don’t think the weight was an issue, he was just not the same. We’ll probably give him a break now and bring him back in October ».
« The pace certainly made the difference for Millenimesta. They went very fast. He was indeed finishing well but I think the pace helped him get to the line. He’s small, he’s tiny and he needs everything to go in his favour. Fortunately, today it did. He could have run second, Yoda Man could have beaten him but I think it was meant for him to be Gilbert’s 700th winner ».
« It’s such a shame for Rear Admiral. I think if Ryder Cup never come across me in the final straight, we would have won it. He’s a big hearted horse and he’s impressed me this year. Whenever he runs, he’s first or second and it was another big run from him. 1400m or 1500m would have been better for him but the way he ran today, what a horse ! »
