At the dawn of the last century, the Gujarati merchants had built a powerful economic base and their influence was being viewed with some concern by the other economic groups.
In 1900, the Atchias were a household name in Mauritius. They illustrated well the spirit of Gujarati entrepreneurship. From the 1860s, they had been borrowing money through notaries and insurance companies to fund their ventures.

It is with great puzzlement that we hear of plans to set up a Culture Industry in Mauritius in order to enable foreign artists to settle down here and produce their work in order to feed into the demands of the culture sector, with the taste and demands of a tourist market in mind.

It is with great puzzlement that we hear of plans to set up a Culture Industry in Mauritius in order to enable foreign artists to settle down here and produce their work in order to feed into the demands of the culture sector, with the taste and demands of a tourist market in mind. Notwithstanding the fact that all real practitioners of art have reason to be dubious vis-à-vis the commercialization of their art within the consumerist bracket which Culture Industry implies, we have to question such an endeavour which aims to bring in foreign talents in order to create local culture.

Gaddafi paid his own life for committing the sins of bad governance. The television picture of the man being dragged out of the gutters, beaten and shot by the rebel soldiers provided the majority of the Libyans with an immense source of rejoicing. For my part, I felt sad for the man whom I saw at a number of African Union summits and who had great dreams for Africa despite his megalomania. If only he had listened to the voice of reason and learned the ropes of good governance!

As the Budget 2012 Speech of the Minister of Finance & Economic Development was being astutely debated by various Members of the National Assembly, there has been during the session held on 16th November 2011 the presentation from one particular Member, who chose to address the House of the day, not with a speech of substance, but rather with a deplorable and lame narration of innuendos, namely on the performance of the National Youth Council.

Tourism has always been associated with travelling away from home in search for pleasure, leisure, adventure and discovery. In crude economic terms, it means money spent by tourists in a foreign destination in exchange for services purchased from the locals. There exists a myriad of items and services on which tourists would like to spend money : accommodation, restaurants, transport, entertainment, sports, site-seeing, souvenirs and handicrafts amongst others. One must add to this list, the growing demand for health care and fitness.

Last week, the Minister of Education & Human Resources introduced the Education (Amendment) Bill in Parliament, with one of the main objects being to amend the Education Act to extend the ban on private tuition to pupils in Standards I to III to those in Standard IV. In all ex-colonies we know the experience of Passes - or identity cards as we now call them. They are the means by which the colonial State controlled individuals in servitude. If you were a freed slave or an indentured labourer in Mauritius, you had to carry a Card. You even had your ID tatooed on to your arm, a precursor of today’s under-the-skin electronic chips”. In the USA “slave Passes” were compulsory until 1865.
